The Su-27, originally designed for use by the Soviet Union, had good range, but it still did not have enough range for Soviet air defense forces to use. In the early 1980s, the Soviet Union decided to develop a new interceptor fighter with longer range and more powerful weapons to take charge of the air borders of the Soviet Union's northern and Far Eastern regions. The Sukhoi Design Bureau, which received the assignment, improved the design on the basis of the Su-27 and named it the Su-27PU prototype. This improved variant can be used as a long-range interceptor or airborne command post.
