Shortly after the Vietnam War broke out, the United States officially sent troops to South Vietnam, bringing with them state-of-the-art weapons.These include the most advanced anti-aircraft weapons, the MIM-23 Hawk missile, miG fighters to defend against the North Vietnamese Air force, and the M163 Wiese anti-aircraft gun.In addition, there was another air defense weapon that the U.S. army was planning to retire, which also made a big difference in Vietnam: the M42 "Scavenger" air defense gun vehicle.Although it was designed for anti-aircraft use, the M42 barrel fired flat at ground targets in most encounters in Vietnam.Its high-rate-of-fire twin-gun proved devastating to enemy infantry, who called it the "Fire Dragon".
越戰爆發不久後，美軍正式向南越派遣部隊，並且帶來了最先進的武器。包括最爲先進的防空武器MIM-23“鷹式”導彈，防禦北越空軍的米格戰鬥機，以及M163威斯高射炮。除此之外，還有一款原本讓美軍計劃退役的防空武器，也在越戰中大放異彩，這就是美軍的M42“清道夫”防空炮車。雖然它是爲防空而設計的，但在越南戰場大多數交戰中，M42炮管平射對地面目標開火。它的高射速雙管火炮被證明對敵方步兵具有毀滅性的打擊，敵方步兵稱其爲“火龍”。
