Johann Sebastian Bach's son, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, wrote that his father's sonatas for violin and harpsichord BWV 1014-1019 contained "some adagios that could not be written more melodiously (literally: "sangbarer" German for singable) today". And indeed, it is often the slower movements that move us most directly. This was true in Carl Philipp's day as well as today. The first movement is actually a melancholy aria for violin - and it doesn't get much more 'singable' than that.
In 1774, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach remarked of his father's sonatas for violin and harpsichord that they were still very enjoyable "although more than 50 years old". In his day, it was certainly not taken for granted that music would still be played half a century later. Unlike Baroque sonatas for solo instrument and continuo, where the realisation of the figured bass was left to the discretion of the performer, in the sonatas the keyboard part was almost entirely specified by Bach. This was a novelty in chamber music.
As Carl Philipp's comment suggests, Bach probably wrote these sonatas during his time in Köthen, around 1717-1723. However, he continued to refine them throughout his life: a clear sign that he, too, considered these works to be a success.
The full moon was filmed by Simone Schlegel and the video was editet by Wenjing Ma.
