Cardona castle was built in the 9th century, and was the official residence of the Lords of Cardona between the 11th and 15th centuries. For thousands of years salt was one of the most valuable commodities and The Cardona family was a powerful family that controlled the Cardona salt valley.

Nowadays, Cardona is a Spanish National Monument, with its Gothic court and chapel now preserved as a museum.
