LAPD investigators say that all of the occupants inside of the car that got wedged underneath a big rig following a crash in last Friday were catalytic converter thieves.
We're getting a major update about a crash that sent a car under a semi-truck.
Assignment Manager Mark Liu is at the desk with new details.
So, Mark, what are police saying caused this crash?
So, Rutabay, officers from LAPD Rampart Division say that Dodge Charger
that went under that semi had four suspected catalytic converter thieves in it
that tried to make a break for it as LAPD officers approached.
That's when they crashed. We covered it as breaking news last Friday.
So, you can see the tail end of that Dodge Charger wedged under the trailer of that big rig.
LAPD now says the four men inside that Charger were all suspected catalytic converter thieves
who took off after seeing LAPD officers in the area of Whitmer and Wilshire in the Westlake District.
LAPD Rampart Division says their officers didn't even have a chance to make a traffic stop
before the driver of that Charger crashed under the big rig.
These are photos now of the evidence recovered from the inside of the car,
including several catalytic converters.
You can see there they also recovered a handgun in that car.
L.A. City firefighters had to use hydraulic jacks and the jaws of life to rescue all four men.
After they were cut out, all four were rushed to the hospital.
Two of them, including the driver, were in extremely critical condition.
They're all now facing multiple felony charges, including grand theft for those catalytic converters.
That is the very latest here from The Desk. I'll send it back to you.
