Long Island native Cole Brauer became the first American woman to sail around the world alone. She arrived in Spain Thursday morning after a dangerous journey spanning more than four months. NBC New York's Pei-Sze Cheng reports.
Now, at 4.30, sailing into history.
Take a look at that.
Long Island native, Cole Brower,
just became the first American woman
to race around the world alone.
She arrived in Spain this morning
after a dangerous journey,
spanning more than four months.
News 4's Paisley Chang's on Long Island
with some of the people who proudly say
they knew Brower when.
Cole Brower made history as the first American female
to sail nonstop around the world by herself.
The 29-year-old who came in second
in the Global Solo Challenge is a Long Island native.
Her teachers at East Hampton High School
watched her heavily documented journey with awe.
It brings pride to the whole school
and the whole community.
All the same things we're seeing now with her
is the same things that I saw in the classroom every day.
Her video production teacher
still remembers her determination and drive.
Cole ran track at East Hampton High
and has a twin sister, Dalton,
who was in the sailing club.
Ironically, Cole was not.
Pretty big waves.
Along the way, Cole faced big waves
and hurricane force winds.
Watch as she's thrown across her boat at one point,
injuring her rib.
She also got so dehydrated once
that she needed an IV, inserting it herself.
On the Today show, she was asked how she managed
to continue with the journey.
There really is no option at that point.
You're so far away from land.
There is no rescue.
Superintendent Adam Fine, who used to be Cole's principal,
remembers a time when she stopped to help a stranger
who got into a car accident.
Really indicative of her personality.
There was no fear.
There was somebody involved in an accident.
She went over and helped them.
And now when I watch the videos of her putting her own IV
in, now I know she can handle that stuff.
For current students who watched her journey,
Cole is an inspiration.
She obviously has the motivation and determination,
and it's really nice to see her achieving the goal.
It just kind of shows that even if you come
from like a small town,
that you can make a big impact on the world
and kind of just get your name out there
and just kind of make a difference.
And all this attention surrounding Cole
has inspired administrators here at East Hampton High
to begin recognizing other people who graduated
and the accomplishments they have achieved.
