The Plum Blossom Three Variations," also known as "Plum Blossom Prelude," "Plum Blossom Melody," or "Jade Princess Prelude," is an ancient piece for the guqin, dating back to the Eastern Jin Dynasty. It was originally possibly a flute or xiao piece, but today only guqin scores remain, with the earliest score found in the "Divine Secrets of the Qin." It is played in standard tuning. The music expresses emotions through the pure white and fragrant characteristics of the plum blossom, praising individuals of noble character. The piece consists of 10 sections, and because the theme is played three times on different harmonic nodes of the qin (upper, middle, and lower positions), it is called "Three Lanes.
