We ate SQUID INK! Eating authentic Montenegrin food in Kotor, Montenegro (food tour + travel guide)

All right guys we are finally gonna try some montenegrin food but first let us show you what we did this morning. All right 7 a.m the longest journey begins with a single step. Oh wow what a viewpoint just as the sun is coming over the mountains here. Quite honestly we're like halfway up so now we go up this zigzag staircase right to the top. Let's go. Sitting here my feet over the edge this is the place to be right now. What a view. Staircase warriors. The sun is up. We went early in the morning at 7 a.m and now the view is just gorgeous from up here. Amazing. I will say business opportunity for all you montenegrins. Get up here somewhere and open a lemonade stand. You could go for a cold drink. Total time one hour 24 minutes bottom to top. Beautiful though beautiful. There you have it and there's actually a bit of castle and or fortress ruins on top of the mountain here. Pretty incredible. I will say there's pink garbage bags throughout the hike and even on top and the trail is perfectly clean so big thumbs up to Montenegro for that and honestly what I thought on this hike was what Ivana was talking about yesterday. The Ottoman Empire conquered everything in this area except for Montenegro because Montenegro is full of mountains and the high soldier always wins and as you're climbing up you're looking out these windows that are wide on the inside and narrow on the outside so that you can put your gun in there and shoot and they cannot shoot back and you're thinking how would you ever defeat an army who's up here if you're down at the bottom of the hill. It's hard to defeat. Pretty special place. All right guys we're gonna hang out here for a bit and then we're gonna go back down there and eat some food no? Time to eat. We're gonna try and find some traditional Montenegrin delicacies as it were and we'll keep exploring up here for a bit and then we'll eat. Oh I'm tired. Okay let's go back down. All right guys so this is actually not brunch because after our hike we felt so tired we took a nap and now it's like 4 p.m or something and now we're at the restaurant called to try some Montenegrin food but in Kotor actually we see a lot of pizza and pasta but not a lot of traditional food so today we found a restaurant. I'm really happy about that. Now this is the most interesting thing I think. I have to show you guys this up close. Look at this It's called black risotto. Black risotto. Oh my gosh. So what makes it black Ivana? It's from the squid ink. If you can you can also see some squid here. Look at the squid. Yeah there's squid chunks in it. Yeah. And I guess risotto is Italian. Yes. But this one is a specialty from here in Kotor because we are so close to the sea they have a lot of seafood dishes. And I will say the black risotto I mean looks amazing. I can't get the camera off it. I can't get my eye off it. It smells. But it smells really strong and I'm not sure. You can do it. I'm not sure I'm gonna enjoy it. You can. I'm not sure. If you guys have been watching our vlogs Steve is not a fan of seafood. I'm getting better. But he's getting better so you gotta try it. You gotta try this one. We'll try. You can do it. We'll try. We also got some mixed fried fish and some stuffed squid. Stuffed with shrimp. Stuffed with shrimp. Which for me. Oh my goodness. This is gonna be delicious. I think so. This is gonna be very familiar and this is like a boss level dinner on extreme circumstances. I'm so hungry. Can I try? Yeah yeah go ahead. I would like you to just eat that right away. Don't even be shy. Really? Take a scoop and just eat it because I guess it's rice right? It's rice. Rice. Now risotto usually has tomato sauce. Normally it's cooked in cream or something. Oh it's a creamy one. Right right right. Creamy rice. Oh can I get it up close like. Wow. It looks a bit like asphalt or tar or some sort of oil products. That's true. It doesn't look very appetizing but I'm sure it'll taste good. Hopefully. Let's try. All right here we go. Wow I cannot describe how it tastes like. You want to smile for us? Is it black? Yeah yeah. And your lips and tongue. It's pretty interesting. It tastes like squid but liquid squid. So would you say the ink has a flavor or. Yes. Maybe the ink has more of a color only. It has a flavor. Tastes like squid to be honest with you. Just like squid but it's good. The rice is perfectly cooked by the way. Your lips are black. Oh no. It actually looks like you've been sucking on a pen and you got ink in your mouth. I mean look at that look at the plate. It's like it's black man. Yeah like charcoal. This is really something. Wow. I think this is my first time eating squid ink. Yeah. I think so. Let me try the fried fish. Very interesting. So hold on. I like it. Ink from the squid is a defense mechanism. Yeah. So they must have caught these squid kept them alive and got the ink out somehow. How did they get the ink? I don't know. Interesting right? Good question. But anyway it has like also the texture is very buttery. Like very rich. Yeah. Buttery. Like a risotto I guess. It's creamy. It's sort of uh it's black risotto. It's good though. I quite like it. I think you have to have like at least three bites to like it but after that it's really good. So it's a bit of an acquired taste and you've already acquired it. Yeah. Amazing. Let's try the fishy thing. This might be a sardine. I know. Can I eat the whole thing you think or there's a bone? Fried fish. Nice right? This is a safe option. Makes sense. We got the huge bay out front. They've been living on the ocean. This will taste similar to you now by now. Familiar yeah yeah. Now Yvonne let's go in for this. This is this might be my favorite. This is the uh squid stuffed with shrimp. Here I'll pat this one. Which I think will be very good. I mean squid good. Shrimp good. Yeah. I've never had squid stuffed with another seafood so this is my first time trying a stuffed squid. That's like hot dog stuffed with hamburgers. That's good. And by the way the smell is so good. Oh this is gonna be amazing. I know. Amazing. I can tell already the smell is so good off that. It's nice right? Best thing ever. Oh my gosh. I think I'm gonna give this one if I could 10 stars. 10 stars? Whoa. I'm not giving away my 10 stars. No no no. Six stars. Six stars. Yeah so this one is five. This is five stars. Five stars. Be honest. Risotto. Be honest. This one the fried fish four stars. Four stars. It's good but it's nothing special. Nothing special. You have I have tasted this before but this one is very special. I've never had squid stuffed with shrimp before so it deserves a six stars. Wow. Really good. And it comes with like potato and spinach salad I think. Salad is good. Oh my gosh Steve you gotta try. All right let's eat Ivana and then we'll give our uh final. All right let's eat. Final review. All right let's eat. The time is now. I've been eating around the outside of my plate sort of avoiding the bullseye which is the black risotto. To be clear most of the times I decide a food is bad before I try it. It's end up being good. But something in my head I've already decided I'm not gonna like it. Not bad no? It's actually pretty good. Very creamy. Yeah. Very buttery. Very buttery but there is some sort of ink flavor. Yeah like squid butter. But the ink flavor is not really fish flavor. No. To be honest I don't like the overwhelming fish flavor. Yeah. Or the fish smell. Because you like squid, no? It's quite good. Oh I'm so glad you like it. Oh yeah yeah we'll finish it. Oh yeah. False alarm. The smell of it when it came out was very peculiar and and unusual to me and um in the end no it's quite good. Wow. I'm not gonna give it a star rating. I will say the um squid stuffed with shrimp. Ivana was right. Six stars. Yeah. So good. Unbelievably good. Tastes very fresh like um parsley or something. Yeah like butter and shrimp and parsley and really nice. And the texture of it the way it's all kind of packed in a nice pocket. It's so perfect. It's so really good. The texture of the squid and with like the the soft shrimp inside it's so good. Amazing. But the black risotto is huge surprise. It was just in your head. I mean you look at it and they serve in a black pot so it's like a black hole on the table just like sucking in all the sunlight. But um pleasantly surprised I would say. Wow. And in honor of the black risotto I actually ordered a black beer. I thought we're going for it all today. Um there you have it. Pleasantly surprised. Wow. Amazing. There you have it guys. First taste of Montenegrin food. Great success. Yeah. Very good. Very nice. I really like their seafood. Very fresh. Very fresh. And this is actually quite good. Yeah the risotto right? Awesome. All right let's finish. Let's eat up. The black ink in the black risotto. Pretty good right? Pretty good. We finished the whole pot. Right. Right. It wasn't that bad at all. I will say uh having trouble describing the flavor. I think our tongue only tastes salty, sweet, bitter, and sour. Yeah. And the texture wasn't any of those. The texture is very buttery. Texture was buttery but the flavor of the ink was none of those four. And yet it was definitely ink flavored. Very unique. Let us know if you guys have ever tried squid ink. Would recommend. Or let us know if you would try a dish with a squid ink in it. Squid. Interesting right? Also wondering what makes it black. Because it's possible it has no nutritional information at all. Or maybe what makes it black. I don't know like iron or something. I don't know. I have no idea. Is it bad for you? Is it good for you? I don't know. Maybe it's super good for you. Maybe. Although if it was good for you, you would have heard about it. True. Like someone would have had like a you know squid ink bath or something. Squid ink spa or something you know. I don't know if that will smell good Steve. Interesting. Yeah anyway we had a great day. We hiked up the fortress. It was beautiful. A must do by the way if you are in Kotor. A must must do. What would you say is a must do? Eat the squid ink or climb to the castle? Climb up to the castle. How are you? Thai. Although they're both very unique. I would say the squid ink is more unique because lots of countries have castles on top of the hill. Not every country has a squid ink. Yeah but the view from up there was really gorgeous.
