North Texas city crews faced with new problem in frigid weather: Water main breaks

Unfortunately, there are a lot of streets in Fort Worth and across the
Metroplex that look like this right now. The water main break here actually
created a sinkhole. Workers repaired that problem and then found another
crack further down the line. Water takes longer than air to cool down. So
these kinds of problems are on a sort of delay. That means we may continue to
see these breaks in the coming days, even as it warms up outside. The water
in these mains don't typically freeze. Instead, it just gets cold and causes
cracks. It's mostly an issue for cast iron pipes, which the city aims to
replace. Just increase the water rate here to do that, but it'll take years
to accomplish their mission. But we have eight over 800 miles of cast iron
pipe in the system. We're talking decades to solve this issue at six
here from some of the folks who live here. 24 hours without water may be a
little more inconvenient than you might imagine in Fort Worth. I'm Matt
Houston back to you.
