This week we had a male goat named Tum come into the farm after his owners were informed that they could not have livestock on their acreage. This week we also lost two of our animals, Java had been sick for a couple weeks now and Fernando the Turkey past of old age, they will both be missed and remembered.

so you might see we we've done some
remodeling
here we have a new
[Music]
animal Mark here and welcome to the 10
Acre Woods on this cold Sunny
Sunday uh so it's midday uh and uh just
a few things I wanted to go over with
you today uh and we'll go out and uh
check on see how the ponies are doing I
can hear Levi over there ning
away how are you guys handling this
cold Billy got something hanging from
your
mouth yeah just uh standing there in the
sun yeah I know this cold snaps only
supposed to last a week Billy don't pee
on yourself
it's cold
out oh silly boy so yeah this cold snap
supposed to uh supposed to stop uh next
weekend it's supposed to start to warm
up again uh and when I say warm up I
mean uh -8 I think for a high uh so
that's not bad we've actually been
pretty good this summer or this summer
this winter
it's kind of like a a Manitoba summer
almost uh sunny beautiful um but yeah
it's actually been pretty mild uh so
this time of year you know it's not
abnormal to see uh into the - 30s wind
chills into Theus 40s andus 50s uh but
it's still cold so all right let's go in
the
barn into the warmth
into the above zero
temperatures I can see there's some
frost build up kind of here on this
window let's turn on some lights here
there's
one and there's the other all right so
you might see we we've done some
remodeling
here we have a new
animal and there he is there
so this is
T hi Tom how you doing
buddy so T is an intact male
goat um and he was from a neighboring
Community uh a rural area of an
acreage um and it's odd because they
were told they weren't allowed to have
animals on their
acreage so uh T is probably only going
to remain with us for for a short period
of time uh because the um the owners
needed a place for him to go because
they were told they couldn't have goats
on their property uh and um apparently
there's some uh we're going to be
finding finding him a home uh there may
be uh a couple opportunities for
him hey bud
hi hi are you a little
skittish
hey so the reason why we have all of
these remodeling that's going on uh is
because we were told he is a jumper and
he's a little
skittish so of course when animals are
skittish a new
environment uh they want to get out of
it
so hey what is it buddy T tum
tum
what is it come here come
here it's
okay here
look here come come Tom come tell come
come look what's
this oh see
food oh good stuff see not so
bad that's some
treats there you
go see I'm not a bad gu oh that's my
thumb I'm not a bad guy
yeah good boy
hey
yeah yeah you're just scared aren't you
can I pet you can I pet you no I
can't all right I'll leave you to it no
there's nothing left in there threw it
down of course he runs over to
it good midaf afternoon
everybody well hello
there
Sheldon yes good day
hi uh so this morning everybody was uh
not wanting to get up uh because of the
cold uh everybody just wanted to stay in
bed right Charlie but everybody's up and
around
now so
yeah it's this cold day isn't it days
like this we think oh it'd be nice to
insulate this shelter as well so keep
everybody warm uh here's pety and Piper
nestled nestled away and this is how
they spend uh most of their time uh
unless it is uh uh breakfast or dinner
time yeah I see leave us
alone so you will notice that um we are
missing somebody so we have uh Jasper
over there um but Java is uh nowhere to
be seen so we made the hard decision to
put yet another alaca down uh which this
has been a tough year for that uh shanzy
and Paula uh late last year uh and now
Java so we were looking back at our
records I thought Jasper and Java uh
came in as seveny olds around seven but
looking at the records it was actually
Wanita and Pedro that were the younger
ones uh so they were rehomed off to a
farm in uh Western
Manitoba uh Java and Jasper they were I
believe 18 years old when they came in
uh and male Paca intact they were
breeding uh a breeding stock back in
their day uh they usually only lived to
about 18 to 22 years old so that means
that Java and Jasper are around 2021
years old so they are in that uh in that
time period uh and he started to act the
same as shanzy and Paula did um he of
course had the eye
infection I don't know if that was
something that just kind of you know hit
his immune system um but he was in that
time period so he was out here he was
lying down just like the girls were uh
we got him in the barn uh we had him in
there for a couple days just to assess
uh you know talking to uh our vet and
doing some research uh we want to of
course make sure we're doing the right
decision not for us but for the animal
uh so we made the hard decision uh and
um and we had him put down so we're
hoping that's it for a while um Jasper
uh is in good spirits he's uh he he
looks great but with
alpaca they take it right to the end and
then they kind of almost hide their uh
hide their pain if they're in any pain
uh so we really have to watch that and
watch their body language uh so
hopefully uh we've got you know maybe a
couple more years out of Jasper but you
know he again is in that time period
where you know that's to be it's to be
expected you know um the animals that
come in uh the rescued animals Sometimes
they come in they're they're older
they've they've been around the block um
and we keep them here and we have to uh
understand that at some point they will
pass um and we just have to look at um
making sure we give them the best life
that we can uh so um p and Piper over
there they're old you know they've been
kind of on the watch list for a couple
years now um but they're doing great so
you know uh as long as they are doing
great uh then um then yeah that's that's
wonderful so but of course we have to
assess everything as it comes along so
that's the tough part part about having
animals uh is of course you know they
don't have the life expectancy as as you
or I do uh and um we're going to have to
say goodbye at some time uh so that
being said we actually had another loss
uh this past week uh and this one was a
little tougher because he's been with us
for quite some time uh and it was
Fernando the turkey
so that was that was tough when Tera
came in and said uh said we lost him you
know kind of hits it there um
Fernando he first came in in
2012 so he's an old bird and and we knew
he was an old bird uh so 2012 he came in
with a few other um uh turkey uh young
turkeys and um we actually rehomed him
so he went to another Farm came back
here uh in what was it
2016 so he spent four years on another
farm and
um the uh the couple that had him uh
went through a divorce and of course
divorces can be messy uh so we took back
a bunch of animals and Fernando was one
of them uh so that would have been uh so
20 uh 2016 is when he came back we had
Tom the turkey at that time uh so uh Tom
uh was a wild turkey that actually came
in here uh and we enjoyed him on the
farm and then he decided to take off
with some wild hens one year uh so then
uh Fernando was the only one uh so oh
Fernando you
know he was 12 years old turkeys
generally live only about 10 years
domestic turkeys wild turkeys maybe 3 to
5 years um but um but yeah you don't
expect these things uh and Fernando has
had you know a great life he's uh he's
interacted with multiple people brought
smiles to so many people's faces um he
has a beer named after him in
Switzerland uh so there was a family
that came to visit friends or family in
Winnipeg came out to the farm uh met
Fernando were just so inspired by him
and um they went back to Switzerland uh
they own a micro Brewery and they uh
they had this Red Ale uh that they were
brewing with no name and um they named
it Fernando so on their website it says
inspired by a Canadian turkey uh
Fernando so uh we were down at the
legislative buildings in
Winnipeg uh and we uh it was the it was
20 2018 I want to say uh and um it was
the first annual Manitoba therapy animal
and service animal day so we were called
down there and um there was the uh the
city of Winnipeg police canine division
brought some P puppies down uh there was
a a horse that came down from a
neighboring community and then uh we
took Fernando in and uh you know he he
uh smoothed with uh with all the
politicians in there uh it was just a
great hit the marble floors of of the
legislative uh walking around there of
course here we are with wet wipes you
know cleaning up any poops that occur uh
but you know you got to think of those
memories that happen uh he went to
multiple petting Farms with different
communities uh it's uh yeah he brought
uh brought a smile to many faces so
Fernando will definitely be one of the
ones that will be missed I know a lot of
you uh have uh him as one of the
favorites uh it's sad but uh it's it's
inevitable you know life ends uh and we
have to kind of accept that and just
look back at the past uh So what had
happened is uh of course he was in with
the geese and the chickens uh and he
wasn't himself he was slow and we
thought well it's starting to get cold
maybe what we'll do is we'll bring him
into the barn uh in the barn here it's a
few degrees above uh freezing so which
is you know a nice um considering you
know cold - 25 - 26 temperatures uh we
brought him in uh the same thing kind of
happened last year he was a little so we
brought him inside and everything was
fine he he he stayed in the barn the
rest of the winter uh he was in there
for a couple days and and ter came out
uh I believe it was yesterday morning or
the day before yesterday morning I think
and um no it was Friday morning uh
because I came home from work and she
said uh Fernando had passed so yeah so
that's aough tough one uh and you know
I'm always thinking you know I'm these
these videos I want to be happy you know
show the animals show some love uh and I
hate uh I hate the Death part of it but
again it's inevitable so um we'll
remember them definitely uh I went
through and I pulled a bunch I guess it
was my way to cope uh I went through and
and pulled up a bunch of images and and
just remembering uh Fernando and what he
has done
uh so I will play that little Montage
here for
[Music]
you

oh

[Applause]
oh so we have some uh chickens coming e
in I think three chickens uh coming in
this afternoon uh apparently there was
uh the woman who has them uh has gotten
old or had some surgery or there's some
medical reason uh she's just not able to
care for them anymore uh so that's one
of the reasons why we uh we get animals
in so uh they will be uh they'll be
coming in this afternoon and bringing I
think three hens I believe uh um so um
so that's that's it you know I uh you
know I hate like I said I hate doing
these uh these videos on the losses of
animals um but you know the last last
couple months has been tough but uh
hopefully here on out uh no more no more
of this so uh all the best to you and
yours and hope to uh see you in the next
video take care have a wonderful week
and we'll see you then

bye-bye
