This Companion Beginner Guide For Teaching Bob Books is the perfect handbook to accompany you as you teach your child to read using Bob Books.
hi everyone it's Sherry from our life
homeschooling where I share
homeschooling resources and
encouragement for everyday moms today I
want to talk to you about how I use Bob
Books to teach my kids to read and I
want to specifically show you this handy
guide that I've used along with Bob
Books to teach eight of our 10 kids to
read if you're looking for a simple yet
practical curriculum to teach your kids
to read I highly recommend Bob books as
a homeschooling mom to 10 I've been
using Bob Books to teach my kids to read
for all of my children I have eight kids
that are reading two more to go and I
can't say enough how much I love their
program I'm a non nonsense no fluff type
of person um I like something that's
just easy to use
and practical and Bob books are just
that for our family the books come in a
five box set and in each box is about 8
to 12 little booklets each story is
really short they have silly
illustrations it's something that kids
really like when I started teaching our
oldest son how to read over 15 years ago
I started with Bob Books it seemed like
just a really easy and simple curriculum
and I loved it from the start as I was
going through however I felt like it
really could use a a guide to go along
with it to introduce some of the new
site words and phonic sounds as we were
coming to them in the books the
progression in it is really nice I love
how it just slowly gets a little bit
more challenging at a pace that the kids
are able to handle but I did notice that
it seemed like we would come to new site
words or new phonic sounds and um there
just wasn't a great way to introduce
them other than just by showing it to
him on the page so as I was teaching my
oldest son to read I decided that I was
just going to grab a little manuscript
tablet and just jot down every new site
word when we came to it and then as we
got further in the books and he started
getting into new sounds so like an sh
sound or um a dip song which is like two
vowes put together like o w and o y
whenever he would come to some of these
new sounds I wrote them in this little
manuscript tablet and you can see here
this is the original tablet that I used
all those years ago in fact this is the
original one it's so beat up that
somewhere along the way I started a new
one and I have used this tablet along
with each of my kids and this has been
such a great tool
for us as we're going through the Bob
Books since this has been so useful to
me I decided to create my own ebook that
I can share with anyone who would like
to use this guide along with Bob Books I
want to clarify that this beginner guide
is used for the Bob Books set 1 through
five so Bob books has come out with
several different box sets I think one
is like animal stories another one is
preschool ready another one is
kindergarten but I just used this guide
with the five box set so set one is
beginning readers and then set two is
advancing beginners the yellow box is
word families the green box complex
words and set five is long vowels so
this guide is to go along with these
sets here in this companion beginner
guide for teaching Bob Books I have a
little note about how I use them in our
hom School I've included some games like
the consonant vow game where kids can
learn how to tell the difference between
a consonant and a vow and then I also
give some ideas and games to help kids
as they're just getting ready to start
reading Bob books so they need to be
able to do two things they have to
recognize the letter names and sounds
and secondly they have to be able to put
simple three-letter words together
together and I give games and ideas in
this handbook for how you can do that in
just a couple days of playing games with
your child and then they'll be ready to
start the first bob box also in this
guide you will find a complete index of
each of the books that are in all five
sets and in each book it will tell you
the site words and the phonic sounds
that are being introduced in that book
so this is an index of all the new site
words and phonic sounds that are
introduced through out the whole five
sets after the index you'll find the
actual site word list and then secondly
will be the phonic sounds and um under
that category I have short vowels long
vowels um endings words ending in y r
controlled vowels dip thongs d graphs
and blends and compound words so these
are all part of the phonics sounds list
that you will find at the very end of
the book I also have um an additional
guide with some notes just some
additional notes about how I teach it in
our home school and also some frequently
asked questions when I do a reading
lesson with my kids I try to keep it
very short 10 to 15 minutes for a
beginning reader and I start out by
using this companion guide and I review
the site words and the phonic sounds
that we've come to that far and this
usually takes about 5 minutes it's very
short and then the next 5 to 10 minutes
are spent in actually reading the books
that they're on we usually do one or two
books a week um I try not to move much
faster than that unless they're really
ready and they're moving through them
quickly and sometimes move quickly
through um the beginning and then it
gets a little bit harder and they'll go
a little bit slower but about one or two
books a week and we just take it at
their own pace and keep the lessons
really short if I find that my child
just doesn't want to sit for a reading
lesson I just continue giving them that
10 to 15 minute reading lesson every day
but I spend a lot more time focusing on
reading aloud to them picture books
chapter books books just little Snippets
of reading throughout the day so that
they learn to love and enjoy books and
enjoy hearing stories if you have more
