History beckons once again for City's all-conquering class of 2023 as they seek to
cap off a quite stunning year with a fifth major trophy. The Brazilian club side, Fluminense,
stand in the way of the FIFA Club World Cup and the opportunity to become the first club in
history to win the Premier League, the FA Cup, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and
hopefully the FIFA Club World Cup in the same calendar year. Eventually he plays a crossfield
ball straight to Ake in the centre of the pitch and indeed Ake decides to have a shot.
It's against the post and it's chested into the net by Alvarez and unless he's in an offside
position, City are in front in 44 seconds. Ake hit the shot, it came off the post, Alvarez
chested it over the line. Big question, was he offside? At the moment it's 1-0 and City are
already on their way, Michael Brown. What a start for City. Edison played the ball forward but he
couldn't find the intended target and the flag has stayed down. It's a real chance here. Is that
a penalty? The referee says it is. Edison has... no, the flag's up for offside. We're just looking
at the monitor now just to show you it was so tight but it was so quick because it's semi-automated.
Very quick, we see his right leg just into the offside position. Foden into the box,
there's a deflection and he goes in. Foden was in the middle, he played a cross but it's turned
in by Nino into his own net. Whether Foden is accredited with the goal, I'm not so sure,
but what it most definitely is is City 2, Fluminense 0. A cross from Foden, it hit Nino
and span over the goalkeeper and into the goal. A brilliant moment as well, great awareness from
Foden, slice of luck, it's going to be an own goal for certain but brilliant from Phil Foden
getting into those positions. Rodri is the man at the near post who they'll try to get on the end of
this ball in from Marcelo. It's actually a good header and a good save by Edison, I think it was
Nino and the offside flag's gone up. I think the first header would have counted and it was a good
save by Edison, I think the first attempt would have counted but the second one's when the offside
flag comes up, so an Edison save and an important one. A big save, there's too much space, it was Arias
to make sure that you get first on it. City into the final third, Ake helps it into the gap for
Foden from the position that he crossed for the own goal, the ball comes back, Grealish hits it
on target, saved well by Fabio, goes out for a corner, City eyeing a third. A final third with Foden,
Foden out wide to Grealish, Grealish into the penalty area, this is promising, Foden hits it,
good save and the rebound is almost turned in but Bernardo Silva is stopped by Fabio, double save
by the 43-year-old goalkeeper and I'll tell you what, you think he was 23. It is played, it's clever
and Foden is in the area, hits it and the really good save by Fabio who helped it away from goal
and there was no City player able to take the rebound, that was a really clever free kick.
As Alvarez comes into the area, it's right across the face of the goal and Foden slides it over the
line, it broke for Alvarez, he played a low cross into the central area of the pitch and Foden slid
over the line and with 19 minutes to go, City lead by three goals to nil and the big five,
the big five trophies are beckoning for the Blues.
Oscar Bobbs just played it down the line, Matthias Nunes is in the right wing position, he's getting
towards the edge of the area, he's in the penalty area, on it goes to Alvarez, Alvarez makes it four,
4-0, he scored the opener, he's now got City's fourth, there wasn't really any lingering doubt
about the destiny of the FIFA Club World Cup but if there was, it has now completely dissipated,
City four, Fluminense nil, it is now official, they are the best team in the land and all the world,
they've got all five trophies, the big five, what a year, what a team, what a coach, you just run out
of superlatives, it is a moment to savour, it finishes the most remarkable year of any
club side in history, what a day, what an evening, what a year, what a club.
