A very good evening, welcome to Boundary Park. Oldham Athletic back in the EFL
and back in the EFL Trophy and their first opponents in the Virtue Trophy. Manchester
City's under-21s arriving here. They've got a particularly great pedigree in this competition
but they are the latest crop of very talented youngsters on the Manchester City production line.
Very deep lines for Manchester City to try and find a way through. Good effort coming in is a
good stop as well. The first real save that either goalkeepers had to make and it's Donaghy.
We had to be alert. Harrick's on the chase here trying to put some pressure on the ball.
That's a lovely delivery though and an even better cross and what a finish.
Super goal from Sangari. Well they cut through Oldham there and the finish was devastating too
and Manchester City's pressure finally yields an opening goal.
Plenty of pressure, the cutting edge had been lacking slightly until that moment.
Lovely run towards the near post and the finish was excellent.
Lawrence again. It's a lovely run from him to carve out the chance for that opener.
Another effort coming in had to be dealt with. Heskey with the strike. The goalkeeper did get a touch.
Switch of play. Lawrence. It's two. A little bit of space and Manchester City
exploit it ruthlessly. It's one of the first moments we've seen Oldham commit a few bodies
forward and the quick counter has yielded a second. Two goals in the space of four minutes.
Put this in Manchester City's favour. They're looking for a third before the break as well.
They may well get it off the bar. Malapodo nearly had his second in as many minutes
but Mickey Mellon wasn't happy with the Oldham defending at the weekend.
His team could be in danger of conceding a third here. Sangari and it's tucked home for a third by
Manchester City. Might have wrapped up the three points just before halftime.
If you're on the score sheet you have to credit the work of Sangari here though.
Shrugging off the attentions of Sutton and then putting it on a plate for his teammate.
Winning the foul here. It's been a tough game for him to get into so far. Josh Hawkes.
Heinz Drummond. Bit of space to operate. Now he delivers and the header towards goal just wide.
Well Harrett was up there. Couldn't steer his header on target. Indeed it took a deflection
on its way through the corner. Not quite dealt with yet and it's a penalty. But it was Drummond
who went down and five minutes into the second half Oldham Athletic have something of a lifeline.
So Spike Britson the Manchester City goal who has had precious little to do now faces
Hannant and Oldham have won back. Coolly taken penalty from Luke Hannant
and the home fans finally have something to cheer. Press has been drawn now.
Sutton turning away from Heskey. The ball's been pinched and this could be dangerous. It's Sangari.
It's four. Oldham Athletic trying to do a little bit too much in their own third.
Manchester City setting the trap and getting their fourth of the evening.
Now Heskey. Heskey bringing that down beautifully and it's Muir. Make that five.
His second of the night as well. It's another very sweetly taken goal.
Quality football on show here. Just look at the touch from Heskey.
And then Muir again another effort on target that the goalkeeper could do absolutely nothing with.
What a five-star display on opening night from Manchester City's under-21s who
take a convincing victory in the Virtue Trophy. Penalty just after half-time gave Oldham a bit of
hope but it proved to be hope of the false kind. Full-time at Boundary Park. Oldham Athletic won.
Manchester City under-21s five. More live games than ever before.
Watch the stars of tomorrow today.
Same city, same passion.
