Who was Louis XV, a passionate scientist and botanist, a discreet king, a man of multiple conquests?
To celebrate the tri-centenary of his coronation, the Château de Versailles honours this unknown king, the great-grandson of the Sun King.
Louis XV was an adored king. He was even called the beloved king.
But at the end of his reign, the situation was no longer the same. The last years of his life were much darker.
Madame de Pompadour, the extraordinary pendulum of passage, the dinners in the cabinet, the king and the hunt,
the exhibition offers a more intimate approach to Louis XV, where the exercise of power is erased to the benefit of his personality.
This exhibition is divided into three main parts.
A part dedicated to the childhood, education, family and non-family life of Louis XV.
A second part dedicated to the king's passions.
And a third part dedicated to the arts around Louis XV.
The part dedicated to hunting in this exhibition is translated with the hanging of paintings that all appeared in the apartments of Louis XV.
400 works from different French and foreign museums, but also from particular collections, are exhibited.
Some have never been presented before.
We can also discover the Rocaille style, called Louis XV style, typical of the time, like this king's chest.
This chest, which is a mythical piece of furniture, which is a masterpiece of Rocaille art,
which was designed or imagined by two brothers, the Slott brothers.
It is a piece of furniture that was in a royal room.
And we can see that it is a piece of furniture with two side doors, two side vents.
And obviously, these side vents were used by the barber to put the equipment necessary for the king's toilet in the morning.
The park also offers the possibility to visit some of the most emblematic places of the castle.
The apartment of the Marquise of Pompadour, the apartments of the Dauphin,
or the room of Madame du Barry, last favorite of the king.
An exhibition to be discovered until February 19, 2023.
