In the language of flowers, the lime tree stands for " marital love", at least that's what it says in the 200-year-old book on the language of flowers:

"Baucis was transformed into a lime tree. The lime tree is therefore the symbol of marital love. If we take a closer look at the trees, plants, flowers and herbs that have been given an allegorical interpretation in the myths of antiquity, we must admire the ingenuity with which they have used the peculiarities of these plants to symbolise the excellent qualities of those who, according to legend, have been transformed into the former. Beauty, charm, gentleness and innocent adornment have always been the qualities and perfections of a tender wife. All these qualities can also be found in the lime tree. Every spring it covers itself with lovely greenery, it spreads sweet odours, its blossoms provide the young bees with the sweetest honey, and women with pliable branches from which they often make artistic works. Everything about this beautiful tree is useful. Its blossoms are used to make sweet-smelling water, and its soft bark is used to make mats, ropes and hats.

How melodiously its beautiful leaves rustle when they are freshly fallen, moved by the breath of the wind! These young leaves seem to be made of a finer shimmering and supple material than the silk in whose lustre they shine. One never tires of looking at the broad shady arches of the lime tree; one always wants to rest under its canopy, listen to its soft murmur, inhale its aromatic scents. The proud chestnut tree and the slender acacia may have tried to dispute the lime tree's prerogative to embellish public squares and walks, but they will never completely supplant it. It will remain the ornament of gardens and forecourts in front of the air castles of the rich, a benefactor of the poor whom it warms and to whom it supplies the wood for tools and even shoes.

At the sight of her, every wife may always remember Baucis, the model of conjugal love, faithful and undemanding frugality.

Baucis once turned Zeus into a lime tree,
Philemon into an oak tree,
So that this faithful couple, united in a small space,
With their roots still lovingly entwine.
In their shade a like-minded pair rest,
That in earthly life's blooming hours
Guiltless love at Hymen's altar
With chains of myrrh firmly bound,
And still revel in his life's goal,
In his youth's most blissful feeling
Even the years have long since disappeared."
