【Classical music and nature Frédéric Chopin: Preludes, Op. 28 - No. 15 in D flat major, 'Raindrop'. This beautiful piece was played by Sergio DuBois. It has Creative Commons license and is provided through www.musopen.org.

The 15th Prélude in D flat major, at 89 bars one of the two longest, stands out from the others due to its traditional tonal language and its outwardly cantabile, nocturne-like melody. However, a special feature that particularly characterises this piece is the constant monotonous repetition of the note A flat (or G sharp), almost continuously in the accompaniment, which gives the impression of evenly falling drops. These repeated notes are rhythmically varied in the theme by being interrupted by chords of the home key in the left hand at different points in the bar. A mild diatonic cantilena floats above it, pure and sweet, almost sentimental. In order not to remain in this sentiment, Chopin develops the melody in the following period (from bar 9) with the help of modulations (to G flat major, A flat minor, B flat minor). This makes it even more singable and gives it more depth, and the accompaniment moves away from the initial monotony caused by the repeated notes.

"In the 2nd long part with altered accidentals, in C sharp minor, the note G sharp is struck monotonously by the right hand, now almost with grim obsession, transforming the sentimental expression into a dark drama. The part in the left hand progresses in mysterious duplets, the upper voice of which, an ascetic, austere melody, becomes even stronger, like a crescendo to a climactic fortissimo, where the persistent repetitions - now on the note b - sound like bells of terror, and all the more so because they are supported by powerful chords in an unusual sequence. After the second culmination, this effect gives rise to what is probably the most beautiful cantilena in the entire cycle, which surrounds the g sharp repeated with tragic tenacity - musically, it emanates from the ascetic two-note motif in the left hand mentioned above. The final, very short reprise of the D flat major theme is limited to the first phase. The second, on the other hand, is tacitly cancelled, so to speak. Instead, a few reolute-sounding single notes lead to the coda, where the monotonous 'drops' (A flat) have a calming and soporific effect."

The stories of Frédéric Chopin's winter holidays in Mallorca with George Sand in 1838/39 are well known. It was there, in adverse conditions, that Chopin completed his Préludes op. 28, which he had begun in Paris. According to George Sand, the famous 'Raindrop Prelude' (No. 15) was composed during a storm on Mallorca, but other sources show that the first sketches were made in Paris.
