
Important Statistical Vocabulary- The Basics

Data Observations that are collected

Statistics when you collect, analyze, interpret, summarize, or draw conclusions from data
Populatin the complete set of objects being studied
data sample is a set of data collected and/or selected from a statistical population. The sample usually represents a subset of manageable size.
Random sample Each item that is selected, in the population has an equal opportunity to appear in the sample. Like picking cards from a deck, each card has an equal chance of getting picked.
Census a collection of every member of a population
Frequency the number of times an event occurs
Mean = average add the numbers up and divide by how many numbers you had
1,2,3,4,5 = 1+2+3+4+5 = 15/5 = 3
Median the middle term 1 2 3 4 5 median = 3 if you have more than one number in the middle it is the mean of those two numbers
Mode the most frequent number 1 2 3 3 4 5 6 3 is the mode
Range difference between the lowest and highest number
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 range equals 7 – 1 =6
There are many ways to display the data collected. One way is to plot your data.
Box and Whisker plot
A graph that divides the data into 5 sections. When drawn It kinda looks like a box with whiskers
(1) minimum, (2) maximum, (3) median (or second quartile) is the median of the entire set of data., (4) the first quartile, The first quartile is the middle (the median) of the lower half of the data and (5) the third quartile The third quartile is the middle (the median) of the upper half of the data. .
Histograms a graph that uses column that touch and quantitative groups in order to show the number of times the event occurs
Stem Leaf Plot A plot where each data value is split into a "leaf" and a "stem" The stem is usually the first number and the leaf is usually the other digits
A line plot is a graph that shows frequency of data along a number line. It is best to use a line plot when comparing fewer than 25 numbers.
