The fern used to be called maidenhair and the following was written about it:

"Hitherto naturalists have endeavoured in vain to discover the hidden properties of this plant. It seems to deliberately conceal the secrets of its flowers and fruits from their gaze, entrusting only its invisible seeds to the west winds. Zephyr alone enshrouds the cradle of these tender children of Floren. With her fluttering hair, he covers the cave like a dark veil, where the lonely Naiad has slumbered since time immemorial. Sometimes it carries them to the battlements of an old castle, where they shimmer like greenish stars; or it forms light threads from them to decorate cool and shady places, the favourite haunts of shepherds. Thus this fern remains a constant enigma to us and hides its secret origin from the most perceptive eyes; but it rewards with good deeds anyone who endeavours to explore it."

This passage originates from the more than 200-year-old booklet: "Die Blumensprache oder Symbolik des Pflanzenreichs. (The language of flowers or the symbolism of the plant kingdom; After the French of Mrs Charlotte de Latour by Karl Müchler. Berlin 1821)
According to this booklet, the fern symbolises modesty and discretion.

According to the "Complimentirbuch oder Anweisung in Gesellschaften ... höflich und angemessen zu reden" (Competency book or instructions on how to speak politely and appropriately in society) from 1840, in the chapter on the language of flowers it says that fern means: "The bond of love between noble souls is often forged at the first moment".

When I read this, I remembered my bridal bouquet. They were small dark red roses with white gypsophila, framed by ferns. I wonder if the fern is responsible for the fact that we have been happily married for over 26 years?

Who can really know? In any case, I'm delighted that there was some fern in my bridal bouquet.

The fern was filmed by Simone Schlegel in the Lauterbrunnen Valley in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland, and the video was edited by Wenjing Ma.
