In the heart of the wilderness, two vastly different nature lovers are thrust together
on a mission to survive.
The military expert and the regular guy with a passion for the outdoors must set aside
their differences and work together to make it out alive.
As they brave the harsh elements and face unforeseen challenges, tensions rise and
egos clash.
But in the end, it's their ability to come together and use their unique skills to survive
that will determine their fate.
Welcome to the thrilling world of Duel Survival, where the only way out is to work together.
Duel Survival's first couple of seasons were hosted by seasoned TV personalities Cody Lundin
and Dave Canterbury.
They made a fantastic pair.
They were a formidable unit despite their many differences.
Cody is an expert naturalist who is well-versed in overcoming the hazards of life in the wilderness.
Up to season four of Duel Survival, Cody was a regular cast member.
However, the network decided to replace the co-host midway through the season.
Cody's many followers were taken aback by the news.
What happened?
Why did Cody suddenly leave?
Well, apart from being criticized for his choice of having no shoes on, Cody was a favorite
for many people on the show.
His insights were very detailed, and he had a way of getting through challenging situations.
So it was surprising that the television network would cut ties with a game changer like that.
So let's take a look at what really happened to Cody Lundin.
Welcome to my survival art class.
Some things that rescuers want to know.
Where you're going.
Who's in your party.
Maybe experience levels, approximate direction of travel.
So I have Dave.
I have Cody.
Lost.
We'll put the direction of travel, approximately.
Cody announced his dismissal from Duel Survival on the Discovery Channel in February of 2014
via Facebook.
According to reports, Cody was let go because he and the other host, Joe, had a dispute
about a survival choice.
The two hosts, Cody and Joe, each presented their unique approach to survival strategies.
Even if you've never seen an episode of Duel Survival, you may recognize Cody as the guy
who doesn't wear any shoes because he's never worn shoes on the show, instead opting for
socks only in the dead of winter.
It was in season four that Cody, an expert in indigenous lifestyles, and Joe, a veteran
of the Marines and special forces, had a full-blown debate.
Season four was supposed to teach viewers how to survive in dire circumstances.
Though they likely made it in the wild, Cody and Joe's alliance didn't make it through
season four.
Back then, the rumor was that Cody had been fired because of disagreement.
Was this true?
We're about to find out.
Cody had a pivotal role in the program.
As a result of his tenacity, he was able to triumph over each obstacle he faced.
If you threw him off a cliff, he'd probably survive.
Cody is crazily tenacious.
On the 17th of February, 2014, Cody went online and posted this on his Facebook timeline.
Dear Campers, Regrettably, Discovery Channel has fired me as a result of my take on health
and safety issues on Dual Survival.
Going forward, I will not be filming more reality show episodes.
And a few days later, he also updated his blog with the following.
Although I will miss some elements from Dual Survival, I will mostly miss my loyal fans.
I will surely miss the opportunity I was granted to teach survival skills on a global scale,
rescue skills, honesty values, respect towards the natural world, and indigenous culture.
Now everyone who had loved the show since its beginning wanted to know why their favorite
character was being fired.
There were so many takes and counter-arguments on the matter, it was a frenzy.
There was a lot of uproar from the crowd concerning Cody's suffering.
In response to the naturalist's unexpected termination, they vented their frustration
online.
Discovery Channel started to rectify the situation and preserve face.
The network posted its comments on the Rocky Mountain Bushcraft website.
We looked for different takes on how to persist in the wild.
We felt that it was time to shake things up.
We enjoyed working with Cody and wish him all the best.
The Discovery Channel and Cody seemed to have parted ways amicably, but soon more drama
unfolded.
Cody believed he had been mistreated and was not ready to end the saga.
That's why he decided to blow the whistle on the network and file a lawsuit against
it for the harm it had caused him.
In his opinion, his co-host Joe had made his life on the show intolerable.
On numerous instances, he threatened to take his life.
At one point, the war hero threatened to drown him atop a mountain.
His remarks were accompanied by the sweeping of an ice axe.
During another filming in Hawaii, Joe threatened to use a spear to stab Cody.
Cody further states that Joe used photographs and Joe's arsenal regularly as a means of
controlling him.
According to Cody, Joe was mean and manipulative, even though he knew they were on camera.
Some people believe that all of this was part of the show.
Perhaps, this provision also provided a basis for Discovery Channel to win the case against
Cody when he sued years later.
Cody also believes the show's producers tampered with the footage to make it seem like his
survival abilities had deteriorated.
He claimed it made him look insane.
Now amidst this, the fan base was divided.
He did look like he was going crazy, but others believe there was more to the entire story.
Some even said that Discovery Channel only tried to make life very hard for the reality
star.
The only noteworthy truth was that Cody didn't quit.
As Discovery Channel said, he was fired.
Everyone just wanted to know why.
Why would you fire the face of a show that raked in numbers?
What did Cody do wrong?
And was it true that Joe tried to end Cody's life?
What was the beef about?
So many questions were asked, but Cody was the one who knew why he was fighting.
Because he was so enraged, the reality star filed a lawsuit against the television company.
Almost immediately, Joe was at the center of a controversy after several of his former
superiors accused the host of exaggerating his military background.
Some even went so far as to accuse him of violating the stolen Valor statues by fabricating
his battle record.
Joe, according to some of his former military superiors, had been lying about his time in
the service and exaggerating his accomplishments.
So there was a bit of a truth in what Cody was going on about, but nobody seemed to care.
Unfortunately for Cody, the judge sided with the network, finding that his arguments weren't
well supported.
Discovery Channel also refused to say anything about why they had fired Cody or if there
was any truth in what he kept telling the public.
It's been years since the whole incident, but Cody is fine.
He teaches his survival and sustainability courses at Yavapai College, Prescott College,
and the ACOSA Institute as an adjunct professor.
He lectures audiences in the United States and worldwide with an unusual combination
of seriousness and comedy, using the same techniques he showed on Dual Survival.
Cody planned and built his passive solar earth structure home in the remote high desert of
northern Arizona.
He collects rainwater, recycles his garbage, and is self-sufficient in heating and cooling.
He pays nothing for utilities, and it looks like he's putting his survival skills to excellent
use, don't you think?
Arizona Game and Fish Department also granted Cody permission to legally collect roadkill.
In all of Arizona, only Cody is allowed to use his hands to catch fish, and Cody seems
to prefer a private life and rarely ventures out of his comfort zone.
Many fans are worried that the reality TV star may not be seen for a long time, but
pictures have surfaced to prove he's okay.
After all, he's a master of survival skills.
Cody is still trying to get an appeal on the case to date, and the battle looks like a
long one for him.
Even though many criticized the handling of the situation, the show continued to air for
six more seasons before it was finally stopped.
And beyond that, Cody seems happy with his life and puts in a lot of effort to the progress
of his own school.
