The almost mythical aura of these violins, Italian, ancient, is a cultural fact.
The museum composes with this cultural fact, and it is important, in addition to
keeping them in good condition, to make them heard if possible.
The Davidoff is one of these very important instruments, an instrument made by
Stradivarius in 1708, and it is in what is considered its best period of production.
What we know about this violin, in addition to its date of manufacture in 1708 in Cremona, Italy,
is that it belonged to a certain Vladimir Alexandrovich Davidoff.
Who was this Vladimir Alexandrovich Davidoff?
He was a Russian general, son of another Russian general, and of a French woman.
This general, who lived in the 1880s, so he was already quite old in Paris,
chose to leave this violin at the Conservatory Museum.
This leave in 1887 by General Davidoff was very important, because it was the first
Stradivarius violin to be included in the museum's collection.
Then, in the 20-30 years that followed, four other Stradivarius violins,
as well as a Guarneri del Gesù violin, were included in the collection.
The Davidoff is the only of the five Stradivarius violins that we keep at the museum,
which is in good enough condition to be restored and put back into play,
without having to modify parts, pieces of wood, of the violin that are original
from the luthier Antonio Stradivari.
The aim of this restoration is to be able to hear the instrument
to the best of what it is capable of giving in its sound, its timbre.
