1970 年 3 月 11 日，地中海上空，一架埃及空軍的圖-16R偵察機正在美國海軍航母戰鬥羣周邊巡航飛行，意圖偵察美軍航母的動向。1架正在空中警戒的F-4“鬼怪”式戰鬥機奉命前往攔截。F-4在圖-16前後繞飛了幾圈，展示了機腹下懸掛的空空導彈，隨後飛到圖-16的側方，示意它離開飛行區域。
大型轟炸機在先進戰鬥機面前本來就沒有多少反制的機會，在當時美軍的主力F-4面前，誕生於50年代初期，機上僅有幾門23毫米自衛航炮的圖-16是完全不夠看的，基本只有待宰的份。但雙方距離已經這麼近了，圖-16的飛行員就不這麼想了，不僅沒有做出離開的動作，反而壓桿朝着F-4“擠”了過來，好在F-4作爲戰鬥機比較靈活，加上飛行員閃避及時，纔沒有發生嚴重的碰撞、只是有點“刮蹭”，但F-4機體小而緊湊，經不起這樣的折騰，只好結束任務返回航母。圖-16則因爲個大皮厚，雖然機身被撞了幾個坑，但反而繼續晃悠了很久才返回基地。
