Always in a rush? Feeling stressed among the hustle and bustle? Take a stroll with us in a landscape painting! Dr. Sampson Wong, an advocator of strolling, walked around the Art Museum of CUHK with our curator Dr. Phil Chan. They even travelled in the painting, enjoying the scenery from different viewpoints. In this video, Sampson shared his thoughts and imagination while appreciating the landscape painting. “Nowadays it’s not easy for us to remain emotionally responsive to everyday scenery,” said Sampson. When strolling, we may have a journey of discovery if we pay more attention to our surroundings. Are you inspired after wandering in the landscape painting with us?

Hello everyone
It's our pleasure to have
Sampson CUHK alumnus Dr. Sampson Wong
來到中文大學文物館 with us in CUHK Art Museum
一同觀賞「山川巨構」的展品 to discuss the exhibition "Majestic Vistas"
KOL Sampson, you're an advocator of strolling
We hope that our discussion
從一個新角度觀看 can shed new lights
欣賞和發掘中國山水畫的無限可能 on the appreciation of Chinese landscape paintings
Welcome! - Hello
Just now we have viewed
一件明朝吳麒《臨夏圭山水》長卷 a handscroll by the Ming dynasty painter Wu Qi
總長十二米 of 12 metres in total
As a stroll lover
如果你可以進入畫裏暢遊 if you could enter the painting
你覺得你會去哪裏散步 where would you go for a stroll?
Which scene attracts you the most?
The architecture catches my attention
譬如畫裏的高塔 such as the towers
Well perhaps not
It's the high ground
I'd love to see what the painter saw
When he painted this painting
需要登山到高處 he must have climbed some mountains
纔看得到這些風景 to a height with these views
I love that too
I talk about observing a city as a pedestrian
或者以日常街道的視覺看城市 or on the level of streets a lot
But actually both are interesting
Every time when I travel to somewhere
I rush to the highest spot on the first day
看一下那裏的城市風景 to view the cityscape there
I find the high grounds in the painting interesting
Another point is the people on the boats
That also fascinates me
Recently I had a special ride
就是乘搭天星小輪遊香港 on the Star Ferry
It didn't travel its normal route
It went between Tsing Yi and Central
I imagine that
如果可以在畫裏江河間移動 if I could cruise like that in the painting
沿途以不同視點觀賞景色 enjoying the scenery from different viewpoints
I'd love the experience
These two thoughts
是我看到畫後的一些想象 came to me after viewing the painting
It’s very interesting that
你乘搭天星小輪的體會 you mentioned your ferry ride
As I mentioned
譬如我們看的這幅作品 the work we viewed
形式是一張手卷,總長十二米 is a 12-metre handscroll
The traditional way to view it
會集結三五知己,把畫分段展開 is to unfold the painting section by section
打開時每段不足一米長 with no more than one metre per section
It works like a film or a moving scene
You'll find tiny figures
其實顯示了他身處不同時空 showing the spatial and temporal transition
You mentioned the boats
This actually appears at the very beginning
There's a man casting his net sideways
That's a capture of a lively moment
Then you see more fishing boats
Some are moored, some with people on it
Then in the middle
會突然看到有座山垂直到頂 suddenly there emerges a perpendicular cliff
There's a boat under it
船上有一個人在撐船 with a punting man
另外一人則坐著欣賞風景 and a seated man enjoying the view
Usually in these paintings
山畫得很大,人畫得很小 mountains are huge, men are small
其實是想表現大自然的壯觀和偉大 reflecting the grandeur of the Nature
I have seen your research and videos
也是用眼睛感受在城市散步 of seeing and feeling the city by strolling
Do you find seeing and feeling
和拿著攝影機拍攝散步 and capturing your strolls with a camera
Once I have an intent to create or document
I got distracted in some ways
To fully immerse, one should have no purpose
甚至不會分享至社交平臺 not even sharing on social platforms
You pointed out that in the painting
人畫得很小,被風景包圍 tiny people are enclosed in vast landscape
We do need to let go of all the intents
或那種很感受到自我存在的狀態 or the strong sense of presence of one self
Recently I like a poem very much
裏面「坐看雲起時」的説法 with the line "sit and watch the clouds rise"
That was used as a title of a pop song
It occurs to me that
古人遊山玩水或者看風景 when reading about the ancients in the Nature
人們大多會留意他們被貶官 people tend to think of their demotion
或者他們的仕途、心境 their career in officialdom and so on
But my deepest feeling is that
它原本可能只是平白地描述 it could have been a plain description
悠然自得,享受日常風景的狀態 of the enjoyment of everyday scenery
Nowadays it's not easy for us
掌握對日常風景的感動和敏感 to remain emotionally responsive to everyday scenery
By advocating strolling, I want to advocate
對日常風景也有種欣賞的心 the appreciation of everyday scenery
