Good morning, it's day one of our trip in Taipei.
This morning we're ready for breakfast and we're heading off to Fuheng, so it's a very
we're going to see, I think there might be a queue which I'm a bit worried about.
Yeah, they say there's like a queue usually for about an hour, but we'll wait, it doesn't
matter.
We're keen to try it.
It's been awarded like a Michelin star or something for the last few years, so yeah,
really keen to try their Fan Tuan, which is like sticky rice with I think pork floss
and Chinese donut inside.
So yeah, pretty keen to try that out.
So we've made it and there's a huge queue that wraps around.
What are you going to get?
So we're thinking we'll get the hot and cold soy milk, the dried radish roll, sesame flat
bread with donut stick and the rice ball with eggs.
We ordered sesame bread with Chinese donut, we've got a rice roll, Fan Tuan, this is what
I really wanted to try in Taiwan.
We've got a, I don't know, turnip roll or something.
We've got a radish roll, we've got signature soy milk, we've got it in hot and we've got
it in cold.
Can't wait.
It's good.
I like this one.
Yeah?
What is this?
It's called Fan Tuan.
It's got like egg on it.
Oh, it's so good.
Can you say that?
Alright, how do I bite?
It's so good.
It's good.
So good, yeah?
Sticky rice, inside it's got egg, Chinese donut and pork floss I think.
Yeah, pork floss.
Stop eating it.
I think so, yeah.
Let me try, let me try.
This is my favourite.
This and then that sesame ball that we had earlier and then everything else.
But everything totaled to $2.25 and that's roughly $11 Australian dollars for the entire
breakfast which is a really good deal.
Yeah, delicious.
Thumbs up.
So Maya and I are trying to find a place to store our big bags because we don't want to
take it with us to Jiuping and we checked the train station lockers but the max rental
period for those lockers are 24 hours which is not enough for us so we had to find a different
alternative and luckily Maya found this place.
We'll link it or whatever because it's all in Chinese characters.
But yeah, we can store the bag for longer than 24 hours and it's pretty cheap.
I think it was like $30 Taiwan dollars for a day which is peanuts.
So you can store stuff as small as your backpack or even your suitcases and you only get 24
hours in the train station so this place is good if you want to go for a few days out
of town.
Just drop it off and then come back and get it.
It does say that if you leave it more than 10 days but 11 days that will double the price.
Which is still cheap.
It's like $60 Taiwan dollars which is pretty cheap still.
So tomorrow we're going to offload this stuff, have a day trip to Jiuping and then come back
and pick up our bags.
Perfect.
So now we've sorted that out.
We're heading off to lunch.
We have a reservation at this Peking duck place at 120.
So we've made it to lunch now.
I'm at this place called Xiang Duck and it's Peking duck.
So I'm super excited to try it.
The only thing is that I didn't order a holder when I was making this reservation.
Between two people.
There's only two of us.
So we're both not starving.
We just had breakfast.
We're just at that place we just showed you guys.
Fuheng.
So we're going to have a feast.
But we're going to just enjoy it because it's the only time we've really had Peking duck
in Taipei.
So we're excited.
And it's really highly rated as well.
We managed to get a booking last week.
What's the rating?
I think really good.
It's like 4.7, 11,000 reviews.
Now that everything's here.
We've got a duck skin.
A trio of sauces.
The pancake.
The duck soup.
The duck itself.
The duck porridge.
Some complimentary entrees.
Cucumber and spring onion.
I'm just going to try the crispy duck skin with the sugar.
Dip it in.
I'm just going to do a little bit.
Like so.
It's crispy.
And juicy.
And there's like this odd taste of sweetness at the end from the sugar.
It's so good.
It's a good combination.
So we noticed something different about these sauces.
You've got the normal, what's the normal sauce?
Hoisin.
Hoisin sauce or something.
That you have with the Peking duck pancakes.
We noticed this, that's obviously like chilli flakes.
But then we noticed this and I think this is passion fruit sauce.
And it's the first time that I've seen passion fruit sauce with Peking duck pancakes.
So Mai's going to give it a try and let us know how it tastes.
Apparently it's like game changing.
We'll see about that.
I didn't want to saturate it with too much sauce.
How is it?
It's good.
It's like tangy from the passion fruit.
Yeah?
Try it.
It's different.
I'm not used to that flavour.
Would you prefer the hoisin?
I would prefer the hoisin.
It's just because this is how I usually eat it.
Okay, let me try.
Definitely try it.
Mmm.
If you get a whole duck, you can pick two dishes to use with the leftover duck.
So we picked the duck congee and the duck soup to use the leftover duck with.
Yeah, definitely get the duck congee.
Really good.
Really, really good.
Come on.
Try some.
Just believe me.
Mmm.
It's good.
Very good.
Yummy.
Chinese donut?
Mmm.
I'm really full.
But I have to try the...
That's unique.
What's in it?
It's like pickled vegetables.
So it's got that sour-y taste.
But it's also got some Sichuan flavours in there as well.
But yeah, it's pretty good.
And it's good because it's just soup so it doesn't fill us up even more.
It's just unstuffed.
There's so much food here for two people.
Mai and I have finished up with the pecking duck.
And yeah, if you've only got two people, you probably just only need to get half a duck.
Because one duck between two people was way too much.
Like we're stuffed right now.
And we're going to go to Elephant Mountain to do a bit of a hike.
Just to walk it off.
Yeah, we're stuffed.
And we've got a dinner reservation as well.
We might change our plans tonight.
We'll see what happens after this hike, see if we're feeling any hungrier.
Alright, Mai and I have just made it to Elephant Mountain, the start of the trailhead.
And we're going to try and walk off that duck.
I think it should take about 30 minutes each way.
So it's a short one.
So let's get started.
So Mai and I have made it to the top of Elephant Mountain now.
It's not bad but because of the humidity you actually sweat quite a lot.
And there's a lot of stairs as well.
And bear in mind the trail continues on.
So you could just walk right past it like we did.
Yeah, sorry you go on.
There's four points, four animals apparently.
Four mountains named after four different animals.
Word of advice, probably don't do it after a big feast like we did.
And also bring insect repellent.
Because there's a lot of mosquitoes.
But apart from that, it's quite nice.
You're in shade pretty much the whole time.
And there's a lot of resting spots on the way up.
So you can have a quick break.
Everyone takes breaks.
So it's fairly easy.
We're at Raohe Night Market.
It was raining before but it stopped so it's good for us.
We're just going to walk down the streets and check out the stalls.
And what they have to offer.
Get a snack maybe.
We're excited to see all the stalls.
It's very lively as well.
Can't wait to check it out.
Kylie, this is a favourite of mine as well.
So I thought I'd try it out.
But there are a bunch of sauces that we're not familiar with.
So we're just going to randomly try it.
What do you think?
Delicious.
It's softer on the outside.
I thought it would be hard.
I thought it would be like a hard quail egg.
It's very soft.
But it's still tasty.
The sauce makes it a little salty.
I thought it would be hard boiled.
But it's actually soft boiled.
The next one we got is this cranberry juice.
Needed it.
We haven't had a drink since that hike at Mount Elephant.
This is so refreshing.
We got it for $50.
Medium size.
And then we got the quail eggs that we ordered before.
I don't remember how much you paid.
Six pieces.
$35.
So we didn't realize this is all you can eat.
And this is all trays of meat.
What are you getting, Mai?
Some greens.
What do you want?
Look at this selection.
What is this?
Crab roe.
Don't get too much.
We didn't realize this is all you can eat.
But we got pretty much one of each.
Of the meats.
It's going all out.
These are the sauce concoctions I made.
I'm so excited.
There's like packets of noodles.
It's just stacks on stacks of meat.
Super excited.
Let's taste.
What do you mean?
Put it in.
Is that enough for you?
Shut your in.
There you go.
Bye.
