Women in Japan have always been too scary!
Hello, everyone. I'm Ayame of Personality.
In recent years, Japan has a lot of attractive tourist attractions and content for non-Japanese tourists,
but it is said that the unique content that fascinates foreign tourists in particular is samurai and ninjas.
Samurai seem to have a lot of respect from foreigners and are often used as words to praise Japanese people.
Samurai is a word that refers to people of the samurai class based on the samurai spirit that existed from the Middle Ages to the Modern Age.
Not only do they participate in battles by mastering martial arts such as kenjutsu and kyujutsu,
but they also have a culture of etiquette, shika, and sado,
and it is said that they also paid attention to spiritual cultivation based on the teachings of Buddhism and Confucianism.
Many famous warriors and cultural figures have been exiled,
and their martial arts and wisdom have been passed down to the next generation.
However, it is not only the male warriors who have fought in Japan.
It is said that men go to the battlefield and women just pray at home.
Such an image may be strong, but it is said that there were brave and noble female warriors in history.
It is said that there are not few foreigners who are attracted to such strong women.
So this time, I would like to introduce an episode of an American man who has a longing for samurai culture.
It seems that he learned about female warriors and was interested in them, so let's take a look at the details.
The results of the research on female warriors by Americans
I'm Noran. I live in America now.
I often go abroad for a long time from work, and I have had the opportunity to go to various countries so far,
but the country I am most interested in is Japan.
I have lived in Japan for about two years,
but the unique culture and tradition of Japan seemed very exotic and attractive to me.
In particular, it is the samurai that grabs my heart and does not let go.
The reason I became a fan of samurai is the movie Last Samurai.
It's a Hollywood movie starring Tom Cruise, but I was really impressed with that work.
Of course, I knew the word samurai before the movie was released.
I didn't even know whether it was a Chinese word or a Japanese word.
But the scenery of Japan I saw in that work was very beautiful,
and the spirit of the samurai was so impressive that I couldn't find the words.
I was completely addicted to samurai, and after that, I started watching a lot of Japanese movies based on samurai,
and my longing for samurai became stronger and stronger.
When I decided to go to Japan for work, I was really happy.
Don't laugh and listen to me, but I knew there were no samurais in Japan now.
But actually, when I went to a big country, I thought,
Maybe there are some samurais left.
At that time, I thought just a little.
Of course, I've been living in Japan for two years, so I know.
No matter what country you go to, there are no samurais walking with a sword in their waist.
In the first place, if you have a sword for no reason, it will be illegal in Japan.
It is recognized as a work of art, and it is not allowed to hold other than a sword with a registration certificate.
Even if it is officially held, it is not allowed to carry it without permission.
And there are very few people in peaceful Japan who commit such crimes.
But you can find remnants of samurai culture in various places.
There is no doubt that the samurai culture is the root of Japanese culture today.
For example, people who practice martial arts such as kendo, kyudo, sumo, and iaido are in Japan now.
No matter how much the floor of the flooring is popular in Japan, Japanese people prostrate.
The virtue of paying attention to the hierarchy and respecting people has remained since the samurai era.
It is also clear that the general greeting in Japan is not a handshake, but a bow.
The distance close enough to hold hands is too close to the samurai and defenseless.
The action that shows that there is no hostility to the samurai is
Koi is to put a sword in a place where the sword cannot be pulled out, sit down, and take a shot when the sword does not reach.
And lower your important head towards your opponent to show your hostility.
It's cool.
This Japanese samurai dojo is often compared to the Kishido, which was widespread in medieval Europe,
but there are quite a few differences between the two.
First of all, there is no hostility to the Kishido.
Because Christianity forbids suicide.
Samurai put absolute value in their loyalty to their lord and fight for their own honor.
And they prostrate to protect the noble spirit such as aesthetics, loyalty, and pride.
On the other hand, the absolute existence in the Kishido is God,
which is to fight for the annihilation of evil, the salvation of the weak, and the resistance to evil, that is, for justice.
It is an eternal mystery as to which of the two is correct,
and it is no longer reasonable to argue about it.
However, I personally like samurai.
Another difference is that there were women in Japan who supported samurai by force.
They are called women warriors.
This is the decisive difference between the Bushido and the Kishido, which shocked me the most.
In the teachings of the Kishido, women are the most important and should be protected,
and the idea of Lady First is the basis.
As a famous female knight in history, Jeanne d'Arc of France is given,
and it is quite rare for a woman to fight on the battlefield.
However, it seems that Japanese women are not just protected.
After I started to admire samurai,
I started to look into the famous warriors who are said to have been particularly active.
Masashige Kusunoki, known as the hero of the Heian period, Yoshitsune Minamoto, and Kushino Kushijou.
The three warlords who aimed to unify the country during the Sengoku period,
when many warlords were fighting for territory,
such as Nobunaga Oda, Hideyoshi Toyotomi, and Ieyasu Tokugawa,
Their stories are very interesting and will have a great impact on the future generations.
And while I was looking into various warlords,
I learned that there were women who fought with the same bravery as men.
Tomoe Gozen is one of the most famous female warriors.
It is said that Tomoe Gozen was the wife of Yoshinaka Minamoto,
the last warlord of the Heian period.
It is said that she fought with him and was in charge of subjugating soldiers.
She has been riding a horse since she was a child and was good at using bows and swords.
According to the Heike story written about her,
Tomoe Gozen had a long hair and a very beautiful face.
However, once she went to war, she became an excellent soldier with a strong bow,
and turned into a woman warrior who was said to be strong enough to fight a thousand enemies at once.
It is said that Tomoe Gozen twisted the neck of the enemy general, who had a good reputation with Kaeriki.
It is said that Tomoe Gozen and Yoshinaka Minamoto were childhood friends,
and one day they started to value each other, but they did not get married.
It is said that Tomoe Gozen and Yoshinaka Minamoto fought together as lord and vassal.
Unfortunately, there is no document that confirms Tomoe Gozen's existence,
but legends about Tomoe Gozen are still alive all over Japan.
I believe that she existed,
and I think that the romance between Minamoto and Tomoe Gozen is very beautiful.
And almost at the same time as Tomoe Gozen,
another woman warrior who was praised for her bravery was Hangaku Gozen.
Hangaku Gozen was the daughter of a noble family who flourished in the area of Echigo from the Heian period to the Kamakura period,
and she was a woman warrior who revolted against the Kamakura shogunate.
It is said that when the shogunate army attacked Tossaka Castle, the base of which was famous for its bow,
Hangaku Gozen appeared as a boy and went up to the yagura and pulled the bow one after another to defeat the enemy.
She was so powerful and powerful that she seemed to have shaken the shogunate army,
but in the end she was taken alive and transported to Kamakura.
According to the history book of the Kamakura period, Azuma Kagami, she is a beautiful woman like a flower.
It was not strange to be a victim of the shogunate,
but one of the family members of the shogunate was deeply impressed by the dignified appearance of Hangaku Gozen,
and he said that he wanted to take her as his wife.
It is said that she accepted that wish.
I understand very well the feeling of not leaving a strong and beautiful woman like her.
I think that the daughter of Narita Ujinaga, the lord of Oshi Castle, is also very attractive.
From her beauty, she was called the beauty of the shogunate.
In addition to that, she was the owner of extraordinary martial arts skills and excellent personality.
In 1590, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who was about to unify the country,
sent an army to suppress Hojo.
And the lord of Narita, who was on the side of Hojo, was also attacked by the Toyotomi army.
At that time, instead of his father, Ujinaga, who was in charge of Hojo,
Princess Kai, who was still 19 years old, took the head of Oshi Castle.
In the workshop of Oshi Castle, the reinforcements of Hideyoshi's loyalists, who had a fiery personality, were added one after another.
However, every time, Princess Kai, who led the troops and went to battle, was expelled.
Princess Kai, along with the shouts of her soldiers,
defeated the enemy in Naginata.
The Toyotomi army, which was overwhelmingly superior in number, withdrew,
and Oshi Castle never fell into the hands of the enemy until the end.
As a result, the Hojo family surrendered, and Oshi Castle became the property of Toyotomi Hideyoshi,
and Hideyoshi, who liked her, made Princess Kai his concubine.
By the way, Naginata is a weapon with a wide-ranging sword at the tip of a long sword.
It is said that many women used Naginata as a weapon when fighting because it is a weapon that is easy to handle even for weak women.
Speaking of Naginata, I would like to talk about Ginchiyo Tachibana.
The women who left their names in history at that time are often not left as official records,
but only she has a clear name in the documents.
Ginchiyo Tachibana is the daughter of Tachibana Dousetsu, a military officer who played an active role in the Sengoku period.
She is also famous as the female boss of Tachibana Castle, and although she is a woman, she is as good at martial arts as her father.
When Tachibana Muneshige, who formed a group of women,
and welcomed her as a motherless woman, left the castle,
she armed herself with Naginata in case of an attack from the outside.
Even during the battle of Sekigahara in 1600, she showed her bravery.
At this time, Tachibana joined the Seigun, which was centered on Mitsunari Ishida.
However, the Seigun was defeated.
After hearing the news, Ginchiyo immediately prepared for the battle,
headed for Muneshige's rescue, and brought him back safely.
After that, Tachibana, who joined the Seigun, collided with Nabeshima, who had returned to the Eastern Army,
but Ginchiyo wore a kachu and went ahead and defeated him.
Furthermore, she stood in front of 20,000 soldiers led by Kato Kiyomasa, who came to persuade the council, and threatened them with Naginata.
Kiyomasa, who saw Ginchiyo's pathetic appearance,
praised Tachibana as a woman leader, and was told that she passed through Ukairo and returned.
It's amazing! It's so cool!
There are many other women who have been active as women warriors.
In order to protect Omishima in the Seto Inland Sea, she led the Mishima Seigun and fought.
Tsuruhime Ohohori
She became the woman leader of the Ii family during the Sengoku period,
and raised Ii Naomasa, one of the four emperors of Tokugawa.
After the death of Ii Naotora's husband Yoshioka Shizuoki,
Tsurusaki Castle, where his son was the leader,
he led women and peasants to wage a war on the farmland,
and he was said to have defeated Shimazu-kun with his splendid command of deceiving the enemy.
Yoshioka Myourin
She grew up with martial arts as a weapon,
and opened a dojo in Edo and became a warrior.
Sasaki Rui
She joined the Roshi Corps in a men's costume at the end of the Edo period,
and was a female swordsman who was a guard in Edo.
Nakazawa Koto
There were so many women that I can't even introduce them all.
In my opinion, Japanese women are basically strong and excellent.
It hasn't changed since the end of the samurai era.
Strength is not about being strong or having a big body.
When I was in Japan, a Japanese woman said,
American women say their opinions clearly,
and their emotions are straightforward, so they are strong and cool.
It's true that it's common in America and Europe,
but Japanese women can be confident.
It's true that Japanese women have a soft and quiet image,
so there may be a misunderstanding that Japanese women are weak.
But I learned in Japan that I shouldn't be deceived by such appearances.
Japanese women have an unmeasurable strength inside.
The Japanese woman who said,
American women are strong,
was very smart and had the strength to never bend her will.
She was always perfectly prepared for work.
Even if there was something she didn't like,
she never showed it to the public,
and endured it with a dignified smile.
She was always polite and kind to people.
It's not just Japanese women.
Many Japanese women I know were like that.
I think she is the best in the world in terms of true strength.
I feel that Japanese women's characteristics have been understood internationally recently.
The word Yamato Nadeshiko is well known all over the world.
Of course, there are various types of Japanese women,
but it's nonsense to say that all Japanese women are like this.
I think it's rude to Japanese women.
But it's true that Japanese women are popular all over the world.
I've been talking a lot about Japanese women since I talked about samurai,
but in short, I'm a samurai who has been supported by such a strong and smart woman.
And maybe I'm jealous of modern Japanese men.
The episode was like this.
It seems that there are many foreigners who are interested in the samurai women who are said to have existed in Japan.
There are various comments from overseas in the related posts,
so let's introduce some of them.
Overseas reaction
There were reliable women.
How strong and beautiful they are!
This is exactly the answer to why I like Japanese women.
Although they have shown so much activity,
it's a story that can't be told much in history.
I remember it vividly.
Women warriors are in every culture.
Not only men, but women were also fighting on the front lines in every battle culture.
I'm always interested in the topic of women warriors like this.
I really admire them.
Women master martial arts and defeat cowardly men.
Such battle heroines seem to be very popular now and in the past.
Tomoe Gozen, who also appeared in the episode,
is a great name for women warriors in Japan
due to the influence of Noh and Kabuki, which have been the subject of her since the Edo period.
Summary
It is easy to imagine that the era of samurai was a difficult time for women,
but with the ability to line up men and women,
there were some women who survived the war like the Sengoku period
with their extraordinary will and wisdom,
and there were some women who supported the samurai while hiding.
In the Edo period, when the Sengoku Rebellion was fading away,
it is said that there were female martial artists called Betsushiki-me.
In addition to being a symbol of caution in places where men were restricted,
she was also a person who taught women martial arts, swordsmanship,
naginata, kusarigama, and magic.
In recent years, many Western men have a cute, pure, and quiet image of Japanese women,
and they are said to be attracted to the cute culture unique to Japan.
In fact, it seems that there are at least a few foreigners who feel that Japanese women have a deeper appeal
because they have a strong mental strength and wisdom to survive in society.
It would be nice if the number of Japanese women
who are active in various places in the future would increase.
How was it?
