Hey, this is Hannes. Welcome to this video. Today I want to show you something that is not quite as easy, but a major step towards sounding like a professional.
It's not always about playing particularly fast, higher and further, but the work of a professional is often about playing precisely on the spot and song-like.
It's not enough to just let the solo guy hang out, who plays everything, plays everything.
No, it's primarily and in 90% of cases about playing on the spot, band-like, song-like and that's a very important point in this video.
It's not easy, but we want to make music together.
So, you might think now, that were only three different chords,
but here it's mainly about mastering the technique, playing the chords nicely and crisply.
That means not to accidentally have some strings swing along, which shouldn't swing along, or to get faster, slower rhythmically and so on.
And that's why we'll take a look at the whole thing in peace, what happens here.
You can play the whole thing as a normal barre chord, of course, but I also like to play it with my thumbs at this point.
Because between the normal barre chord, H minor, and this thumb variant, there are worlds, in my opinion.
Listen to the difference.
Normal barre chord, and then this chord.
It sounds much slimmer with the thumb, because in the end we leave one string out and they dampen and make room for the other instruments at this point.
It sounds a little funkier, not quite so soft.
And this technique is so practical, because it can be used for both major and minor chords in this case.
And it makes the whole thing sound much cleaner.
So, we start here with the thumb in the 7th fret on the E string.
It's hooked in here.
In the end, I press here, with this part of the thumb, a little to the side, because it's the thumb joint.
First, make sure you get the sound out.
Just try to grab it with your thumb.
Don't use too much force.
Really hang it in your throat.
And then it goes up here.
That's enough.
So, ring finger in the 9th fret on the D string, and the index finger in the 7th fret on the G and H strings.
You can also add the E string if you want, but you don't have to.
The important thing here is that it's nice and crisp.
Dampened.
Just get rid of the E string.
The A string is dampened anyway by your ring finger and your thumb, of course.
The A string is dead.
So, you play the E string twice, dampened, with your hand edge.
And then, once un-dampened, the rest of the chord from the D, G and H strings.
It's a bit like a drum kit.
Let's play the whole thing two notes lower on A major.
Thumb in the 5th fret, ring finger in the 7th fret, middle finger in the 6th fret, and index finger in the 5th fret on the D, G and H, E strings.
The A string is dampened again.
And then we go to E minor.
Empty E string, then 7th fret, A string, 9th fret, D and G string, 8th fret, H string and 7th fret, high E string.
And again, dampened, deep string, and then the rest of the chord is open.
So, from the beginning.
H minor, A major, E minor, H minor.
And again, H minor, A major, E minor, H minor.
A major, E minor and H minor.
Of course, you can also play the whole thing with the normal barre chords.
But for me, there is not such a nice separation like with a drum kit.
But because I have a jump here, because I leave out the A string, I have these deep notes.
And then on top, the high parts of the chord.
It just sounds better separated from each other.
Deep notes, high notes.
And I find that with such a groove where it should be very funky and rhythmic.
Super fitting.
It's extremely fun to play.
So, thank you for watching.
