In this video we want to take a look at what ADHS really is.
You will learn something about the diagnosis criteria, the frequency, the prognosis and therapy options.
And at the end of the video I will go into what educators should pay attention to when dealing with ADHS.

What is ADHS anyway?
ADHS stands for attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder and is a neurological developmental disorder
that manifests itself mainly in childhood.
People with ADHS have difficulty controlling their attention,
regulating impulsive behavior and managing their hyperactivity.
ADHS is not only related to childhood, but also possible in adulthood.
How often is ADHS spread?
The frequency of ADHS varies, but estimates show that it affects around 5-10% of children worldwide.
It occurs in young people about 3-4 times more often than in girls.
There are no reliable numbers for the adult age, as symptoms can weaken with age,
for example due to the acquisition of suitable management strategies
and the ability to shape one's own life in a suitable way.
However, it is said that around 4% of adults have ADHS.
What are the symptoms and manifestations of ADHS?
The characteristics of ADHS include problems with attention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.
With attention, for example, it can happen that a person can only concentrate heavily on tasks or instructions,
is slightly distracted and jumpy or simply forgets things.
Hyperactivity is often expressed by restlessness, restless behavior,
constant walking around or the feeling of being driven.
For schoolchildren with ADHS, sitting in school for hours is often a big challenge,
which can lead to conflicts and problems again and again.
In addition to the problems with attention and hyperactivity, impulsivity is another feature of ADHS.
Impulsivity is shown by actions without thinking,
difficulties waiting for the right moment or interrupting others in conversations.
The diagnosis of ADHS is usually based on the criteria of the International Classification System for Diseases in the 11th Category,
in short, the ICD-11.
The symptoms must last over a period of at least 6 months,
start early in childhood and cause significant impairments in various areas of life,
such as school or at home.
The human can also use the characteristics of ADHS for its advantages.
For example, hyperactivity can cause a higher physical performance.
It is also described that ADHS promotes creativity and imagination.
People with ADHS, however, do not rarely work in creative or physically active professions in adulthood.
Is there a cause for ADHS?
The exact cause of ADHS has not yet been fully clarified.
It is assumed that a combination of genetic, neurobiological and environmental factors contributes to the development of ADHS.
Can ADHS be cured? What is the prognosis?
The prognosis for children is different.
Some people show a significant improvement in symptoms in adulthood,
while others can always have significant limitations and difficulties.
However, with an early diagnosis and an appropriate intervention,
many children can learn to handle their symptoms better and thus significantly improve their quality of life.
The therapy options for ADHS include a combination of behavioral interventions,
psychoeducation, i.e. a clarification of ADHS with all its properties,
and, if necessary, a drug treatment.
A drug treatment is recommended if the symptoms are significantly strong,
significantly limit life and lead people to suffering.
The use of drugs, e.g. methylphenidate, is often heavily criticized.
The behavioral interventions mentioned above can include techniques such as strengthening the desired behavior,
structuring the environment, time management and social skills training such as therapies.
Psychoeducation includes the clarification of parents, teachers and children about ADHS,
as well as the provision of management strategies and support.
The treatment and intervention should, however, always be individually adapted
and careful monitoring by medical staff is necessary.
What is important to know for pedagogical professionals?
It is important to note that ADHS is complex and that every affected person is individual.
Comprehensive assessment and support tailored to the individual needs are crucial
to help people with ADHS as best as possible.
Educators should, for example, pay attention to the following points when dealing with children with ADHS.
A structured environment with clear rules and routines should be taken into account.
This creates predictability, a framework and security for people.
For example, clear and short instructions are important when asking questions.
Since impulsivity is a property of ADHS,
the person should be supported in terms of impulse control, emotion regulation and frustration tolerance.
Despite an ADHS diagnosis, the entirety of the individuality of the person should never be forgotten.
What is your experience with attention and hyperactivity disorder?
Have you ever worked with people with ADHS?
Or maybe you even have a diagnosis yourself?
