In Baden-Württemberg's Schorndorf, there have been parents' strikes in recent weeks,
in which parents simply deliberately and systematically picked up their children too late due to shortened opening hours of the kindergartens.
What exactly is up with these parents' strikes, what consequences this has, what can be done and much more,
we want to take a closer look at in today's video.
Hi and welcome to a new video.
On the Erzieherkanal, at least one video appears every week on topics related to the education profession.
Feel free to leave a free subscription so you don't miss any more videos and support the work behind the Erzieherkanal.
And now, have fun with the video.
As already mentioned in the intro, in Baden-Württemberg's Schorndorf, parents deliberately picked up their children too late
in order to protest against the shortened opening hours of the kindergartens.
Let's take a closer look at the situation, the consequences and the possible reasons for this.
By now, everyone should be aware that the lack of teachers in Germany is increasing more and more drastically.
Until 2025, there are almost 179,000 teachers missing.
There is no real solution to this lack of teachers.
In the city of Schorndorf, of course, the situation does not look any different.
There is simply a lack of staff.
Full-time care can no longer be provided due to the lack of staff
and the opening hours of the city facilities were shortened, despite a legal claim to a kindergarten.
A huge problem is that the current situation is hardly compatible with the supervision and care obligation.
Education and funding, which is actually the goal of the kindergartens, can hardly be discussed.
If something would happen to a child due to a supervision obligation injury,
then this would hardly surprise anyone at the moment.
After multiple complaints and protests from the parents because of the shortened opening hours,
they now partly go to the barricades and deliberately pick up their children too late
and thus exaggerate the opening hours of the facilities.
At this point I would like to quote a few sentences from the Stuttgarter Zeitung.
You can find the link to the article in the video description.
The protest of the parents against the reduction of opening hours in the urban daycare centers
has remarkable fruits in Schorndorf.
In the same way, children were in vain waiting for mom or dad.
In individual cases, the notorious exaggeration of the closing hours is apparently not the case.
In some cases, more than half of the children waiting to be picked up are left standing.
Another quote from the SWR.
I will also link this article to you in the video description.
This is how clear this withdrawal is, how much the situation is burdening some families.
In the meantime, shorter opening hours could soon become a rule by exception.
At least the urban day can be imagined to be comprehensive for Bahn Württemberg.
So it can be seen that it will get worse.
As I said, there is no real solution for the lack of staff.
I think that this situation is a specialist, but also a human catastrophe and for several reasons.
I would like to get rid of a few words and thoughts about this.
Feel free to write your thoughts about this situation in the comments.
Even if the city of Schorndorf is so explicitly named here,
the whole thing is not only about this one city and the facilities there,
but can be applied to almost every federal state in Germany.
I find the situation so frustrating on the one hand, because it has been foreseeable for years.
These circumstances have been pointed out over and over again, and yet nothing really happens.
And on the other hand, it is so catastrophic,
because everyone involved is an absolute loser in this situation.
It is simply annoying, burdensome and harmful for everyone.
Not only good care and education is wasted on children.
I don't even want to know how they feel when the mother or father just doesn't come to pick them up
and they also notice that the parent is visibly annoyed by it.
But even the parents cannot rely on safe care despite the fact that they are legally guaranteed a place to live.
They have to throw away their family and professional planning,
even if the pick-up strike is of course not a solution at all.
And then there are the pedagogical experts, the big losers,
who have not yet turned their backs on the profession.
They have to justify themselves for all this,
even though they are the ones who can do the least for all this.
On the contrary, they even make sure that care is possible at all.
If parents do not consciously pick up their children on time,
this of course leads to massive conflicts.
The professionals are annoyed, the parents are annoyed and the children are in between.
And no one can really do anything about it.
Even from a professional perspective, this is absolutely critical in my eyes.
In early childhood education, one speaks of an educational and educational partnership
between professionals, parents and the child.
It is so enormously important for child development
that there is a good relationship between professionals and parents,
so that they can optimally accompany the educational and educational process of the child.
A constructive educational and educational partnership
is really made difficult by the prevailing conditions.
On the contrary, the probability is even much higher
that there is a split between parents and pedagogical experts due to such situations.
The fronts are hardened and one could almost say
that due to political decisions, parents and professionals are played out against each other.
I want to emphasize here again that I want to avoid exactly that with this video.
I don't want to divide into good or bad, right or wrong.
The parents are not the bad ones.
In the plot, I see a great need and despair due to the situation,
which politics has screwed up and has not been regulated at all for years,
despite massive and clear indications of the situation in the child care sector.
Even if I of course see the means of the affected parents,
namely consciously picking up their children too late, as absolutely harmful.
This increases the pressure on the pedagogical experts even further
and they can do little to change the situation as individuals.
They are even the ones who are currently making sure that care is possible at all.
We remember that by 2025, 179,000 parents and educators will be missing
and there is no solution for this personnel need yet.
In addition, according to a study by Verdi,
7.1% of educators indicate that they will leave the field of profession.
Another 27% consider this.
If the pressure on pedagogical staff is further increased and forced to justify this,
for situations for which they themselves can do nothing,
the framework conditions are not improved as quickly as possible
and the work of the educators is not appreciated as it should be,
then this will certainly not be useful to the situation,
but rather worsen everything even more dramatically.
Instead of paying an adequate salary in the multi-year demanding training,
to improve the framework conditions and to make the profession more attractive in general,
unfortunately little concrete happens.
As already mentioned several times in other videos,
there is a position paper from Prof. Dr. Fröhlich-Gilthoff
and 150 other scientists on the current situation of the care system
and very concrete demands and solutions for our professional field.
Due to the situation in Schorndorf,
there were requests from the SWR to the state government with a request for resignation.
I quote here from the Instagram post from the SWR.
You can also find the link in the video description.
The state government currently does not want to take a position on the strike in Schorndorf.
The care in daycare centers is the task of the municipalities,
explained Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann of the Greens on a SWR request.
Finally, they decided about the opening hours and the staff.
That is their task, not mine, so Kretschmann.
The mayor reported in an interview that he,
when he was told about the parents' strike in Schorndorf,
has given the pedagogical staff overtime.
At the same time, he says that he knows
that the remaining teachers should be treated with care.
I find this statement contradictory and quite cynical.
You can find the statement from the interview in video form in the SWR article from minute 2 and 7 seconds.
I link you to the article with the video also in the video description.
Another abstruse demand currently consists of
that the daycare groups are simply further enlarged by exception.
There are various recommendations and guidelines
which are based on scientific findings and studies
and state that a pedagogical staff should take care of a maximum of 7.5 children
in order to ensure professional accompaniment
and to be able to meet the supervision and care duties.
All people who know about the daycare system and have an insight
will laugh at such numbers, or maybe even cry.
7.5 children per day are so far away from reality.
In part, twice as many children are cared for per day.
Losers of the current situation are above all the children,
but of course also the pedagogical staff and the parents,
i.e. all involved people.
A lose-lose-lose situation and so far there is no improvement in sight.
I find it all super frustrating and I would be interested in your opinion on the subject.
How would you react if you work in a facility
and the parents consciously pick up their children too late?
Feel free to write a comment and share your opinion with us.
