Hello and welcome to the podcast Fluidité, episode 133.
Sharenting is the fact for parents to share photos of their children on social media.
It comes from the contraction of the English words share, which means to share,
and parenting, which means parenting, so the fact of educating children.
But we now know that showing children on the internet can be very dangerous.
So France has decided to act in this direction to respect the private life of children.
This is the subject of the French news, which I will tell you about now.
But for that, stay tuned!
Do you learn French?
Fabien offers you content in common French that talks about culture, history, French geography,
but also biographies, dialogues or learning tips.
Welcome to the podcast Fluidité!
Before starting, I would like to talk to you about our VIP club.
This is my Patreon page where you have material to study my content and become better in French.
For example, for each content I make, you have exclusive bonuses like the vocabulary list,
bilingual transcriptions, the audio version, and you receive the content before the public.
So everything to promote your immersion.
The VIP club is also a large community with more than 350 French learners.
We talk together every day on a private telegram group.
We do different activities in French twice a week in video calls.
So you can also practice your French, find or share resources with other learners around the world,
and make friends.
You will practice your French while enjoying yourself and it is crucial to stay motivated.
To sign up for the VIP club, I leave you the link in the description on the podcast platforms
and on YouTube to join our VIP club on Patreon.
You can stay as long as you want and come with pleasure.
I often do promotions so do not hesitate to go see my Patreon page.
People love to post photos or videos on social networks.
And often their children are on it, that is to say that they appear on the published content.
Or the parents take their children directly in photos or videos to show them to the public on the Internet.
This practice is becoming more and more common and it has already become commonplace for many of us.
Others go even further by creating an Instagram or TikTok account in the name of their little girl or their little boy
to put it on the front of the scene so that the child is the star.
This is the case for some influencers who can make a lot of money thanks to their children on social networks.
And according to a British survey, a child appears on average on 1,300 photos published online before the age of 13.
It's huge.
And if posting photos of your children is a common practice, it is not at all trivial.
So there are possible consequences that we don't necessarily think about at the moment.
But then why would that be a problem?
So the Internet is a vast world and there are not only benevolent people on the web,
but there are also evil people.
One of the major risks is criminal networks and in particular pedo-criminal networks
which recover images or videos of very young people for horrible uses that we don't want to imagine.
And even more when children are in swimsuits or half naked on the content when they are at the beach or at the pool for example.
In addition, if you post a photo or a video on a social network, you can add the location,
so the place where the photo was taken or the video was filmed.
Which can be even more risky since these evil people could follow a child on the trail,
that is to say follow him very closely.
There are also other problems that can arise because of artificial intelligence.
Indeed, for a few months we have seen the use of this new technology explode,
which has made huge progress very quickly and which will advance exponentially in the future.
Facial recognition now allows you to find a child who has grown up with an adult photo of him a few years later.
That is to say that if artificial intelligence analyzes the photo of a child or a teenager
and publishes a photo of him once an adult,
intelligence will be able to find photos of him when he was a child,
which poses a big problem of privacy and private life.
Another problem can arise, it is mockery or blackmail at school.
The photo or video of a young teenager could be deleted or used by his classmates
to make fun of him and thus create moral harassment.
Moreover, recently a child committed suicide because of the harassment he had suffered at school
and this news made the newspaper.
So school harassment is becoming more and more sanctioned and monitored,
and cyber harassment is part of it.
There is another risk, that of identity usurpation.
Some companies can use the image of children against their will
to promote products or services when they are actually scams.
Against someone's will means without his consent,
so without the child's consent.
Then there are other risks, but I wanted to mention the main ones.
But there is a lack of prevention from the platforms, from all these social networks.
They do not communicate or very little about the issue of the protection of minors on the Internet
and do not raise awareness.
We could, for example, imagine an artificial intelligence
that would recognize that there is a child in the photo or video
and would display a warning message
or would propose a tool to blur the face of children,
but this is not the case for the moment.
Blurring means blurring an image,
making an image blurry and not clear.
In French we say that a photo is clear or that it is blurry.
Moreover, the German government recently launched a campaign for awareness
dedicated to parents on the subject of children's content on social networks.
Then the French government decided to react on the matter
and wanted to propose a law to guarantee the respect of the private life of children on the Internet
and to protect them.
The proposal of the law was unanimously accepted last March by the National Assembly
and last May by the Senate.
If you want to understand how the vote and the adoption of laws in France work,
I made an entire episode that will explain the whole French political system to you.
This text of the law aims first to raise awareness of the risks that children run
and it also provides for sanctions if certain limits are exceeded.
In French we also say to run a risk, as if to say to risk.
The law has not yet been adopted since it is still under review at the moment,
but the government is working on it and we will have news about it soon.
In fact, we can already act before the laws change.
The best solution would of course be to never publish a photo or video where children appear.
On the other hand, if we really want to put content online with our children on it,
we could blur their faces so that they are not recognizable by anyone or by artificial intelligence.
I see a lot of people around me taking a picture when the child is on his back
so that we don't see his face and I think it's a good alternative.
Recently, the boss of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, published a family photo
where we can see him with his wife and his three children.
On the faces of the two daughters of Mark, who are 7 and 5 years old, there is a smiley so that we don't see them.
On the other hand, he didn't blur his last child, a newborn, so a baby just a few months old.
In fact, I suppose he knows that artificial intelligence is not yet efficient enough
to be able to distinguish the newborns from each other since their faces look alike.
Another solution is to publish the content only for a specific list of friends.
On Instagram, we can choose to show the stories or publications only to contacts we have chosen
without the content being seen by the rest of our friends or subscribers.
We can also think of putting his profile in private to allow only followers we trust to see our publications
and thus not leave it open to the public.
In any case, as far as my wife and I are concerned, if we have children one day,
we both agree that we will not show them on social networks
and anyway it's not really our thing to show ourselves on the Internet
and we rarely publish on our private profiles.
We are probably still in the old school, the old school as we say
and we prefer to share photos by instant messaging to loved ones, like WhatsApp for example.
Even if we know that the photos still go on the Internet when we share them on a messaging service,
but the risk is less than if the content was public on a social network.
And you, what do you think?
Do you think that all this technology is going too far?
Are you afraid?
Are these laws a good idea to regulate all this?
The whole question of private life, our private life and the private life of children on the Internet.
And tell me in the comments if you liked this new format where I explain a specific topic of news.
Thank you all for watching or listening to this episode.
