Can you imagine that there is life 1,400 to 1,500 meters deep under thick ice?
That's exactly what research teams from all over the world are proving now.
The Antarctic is a strange place that is explored by dozens of researchers and adventurers.
This remote ice hell sometimes reveals itself as a fascinating natural spectacle,
but then as a frightening place that you would rather not visit.
We are now sharing 12 finds with you that you have never seen before.
Life in one kilometer depth
More than one kilometer deep under the thick ice of the Antarctic,
a research team from New Zealand found a bizarre world that had been completely isolated from the rest of the world for thousands of years.
With special drills and a camera, the discoverers went on a journey into a world that no one had ever seen before.
Completely without light and in water that is just above freezing point, an ecosystem of dozens of amphipodes developed.
These shrimp-like creatures are among the oldest forms of life on this earth.
The shrimps are certainly harmless, but the researchers are not sure what will happen one day
when the ice has melted and this deep world hits us.
Bacteria and germs that could change the sea and our world forever may live there in the depths.
Coral reef in the depths
The Antarctic may contain dozens or hundreds of these bizarre and completely isolated ecosystems.
Each develops uniquely and contains a special selection of living beings and plants.
The fact that there are not only barren colonies of highly specialized living beings,
proves a find in the east of the Antarctic.
There, researchers found a world hundreds of meters deep under the ice that is as rich as a tropical coral reef.
Dozens of species of corals, swans, starfish and small octopuses appeared in front of the camera.
This rich world is also an ecosystem that has developed completely without external influences for thousands of years.
The richness of colors, the shapes and the shape of a surreal underground garden
once again prove how creative and resilient life on this earth is.
This world also developed without light and in cold water.
Discoveries like these define the standards for living conditions completely new
and we have to take this into account when looking for other living beings in space.
Since the finds in the Antarctic, researchers are hoping to find life on distant ice moons under kilometers of thick ice outside the earth.
Bizarre sound from ice holes
Dozens of research teams drill through the Antarctic like a Swiss cheese.
The goals of the researchers are not only unique underground worlds, but also the ice itself.
In the depths, scientists find ice that was created 800,000 years ago or even earlier.
Each layer reveals exciting details about the epoch and the climate to the researchers
and some layers even contain remains of plant parts.
Such finds leave clues as to when and whether the Antarctic was a continent that was entirely or partly free of ice.
But have you ever wondered what the researchers do with the holes after drilling?
They stuff them again.
After the drillers have worked their way through the depths with the help of hot water,
removed samples or lowered cameras, the holes are simply filled again with ice blocks and closed with snow.
A strange phenomenon has developed.
Ice blocks falling into the hundreds of meters deep holes make sounds that sound like a strange digital music instrument.
For the researchers, it has become a joy to throw various shaped blocks into the holes and listen to the sound.
Secret Nazi base
In the 1930s, the Nazis undertook several expeditions into the Antarctic.
What exactly Hitler's expeditions were looking for at the southernmost point of the earth is part of many speculations.
Some say it was purely scientific assumptions, others claim Hitler was looking for legendary peoples and secret civilizations
that were supposed to settle in the remotest parts of the earth.
The German Antarctic Expedition 1938-39 was led by Captain Alfred Ritscher.
The main goal of this expedition was officially the cartographic exploration of a part of the Antarctic that the Nazis called New Swabia.
After the war, there was a stubborn rumor that the Nazis had built an underground base in the Antarctic,
where several of them retreated after the war.
Sightings of mysterious U-boats near the Antarctic are supposed to confirm this suspicion.
Such a base was never found.
However, it is known that many high-ranking Nazis fled to South America to secure themselves.
Fireland, the southernmost tip of the American continent, is relatively close to the Antarctic.
Strange oval
A satellite provided this recording and since then, the heads have been smoking in the canals of the Antarctic.
What could that be?
At first glance, the object looks like a collapsed UFO or the remains of a special building that was covered in snow.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to directly examine the strange oval.
The formation is located in a part of the Antarctic that is not accessible to humans.
More and more theories are spinning around this find,
because there are still rumors that there are secret civilizations and bases of aliens in the Antarctic.
In 2022, researchers published a study,
according to which the 120-meter-wide formation could of course have arisen.
Catabatic winds can cause eruptions around very high mountains due to temperature differences that resemble this oval.
What do you think?

Organism 46b
This story shakes the Internet.
In the icy land of the Antarctic, a group of Russian scientists experienced the pure grey at Lake Vostok.
Lake Vostok is a huge, underground water that is covered by thick ice.
After the Russian researchers had drilled through the thick ice,
they reached a hidden freshwater reservoir of the lake.
Curiously, they dived down and soon regretted their decision.
In the depths, they encountered a monstrous squid with 14 terrifying tentacles.
This creature was so brutal that it attacked the researchers immediately and killed some of them.
The researchers who escaped with their lives immediately got up.
Later, they admitted that the squid was able to separate a poison into the water that paralyzed its prey.
This terrifying story triggered debates and analysis.
Allegedly, scientists are said to have known about large squid species in the Antarctic,
but others shook their heads.
This story can only be a hoax, because squid live in salt water
and there is no evidence for the existence of the creature,
which is called Organism 46b in history.
Singing Ice
There is ice in the Antarctic, in the truest sense, at every corner.
But singing ice is a special feature even in this place.
Researchers discovered the singing of the Ross Ice Shelf by chance when they made seismic measurements.
The measurements were used to document the annual return of the ice.
The fine vibrations that the shelf constantly emits were converted into audible sound by sonography.
It sounded like a mostly melancholic, sad-sounding symphony.
It is interesting in this context that the ice can change its mood.
If the weather changes, the melody also changes.
In the meantime, researchers can see from the changes in the song of the ice how the shelf will move
and what changes are about to occur.
The Lost Kingdom of Atlantis
The Greek philosopher Plato reported of a city so beautiful and so rich
that it could not be compared to any other in this world.
Noble beings of high education lived there, agriculture flourished and kings were among the noblest in this world.
Every child today knows the name Atlantis, but no one really knows whether this kingdom was pure poetry or real.
Allegedly, Atlantis went under after the inhabitants had fallen from their nobility
and began to move aggressively into the world.
But where is Atlantis today, if the story is really true?
According to mythology, the city sank into the depths of the ocean.
The latest scientific findings suggest that Atlantis was a peninsula on the southern tip of Africa.
It is now suspected that the Antarctic was also meant with the southern tip of Africa.
From Cap Agulhas to the northernmost tip of the Antarctic, it is about 3,800 to 400 kilometers.
Ancient egg
The fact is that the Antarctic used to be a green country with animals and a rich nature.
An ancient egg now reveals more about the Antarctic prehistoric past.
The petrified egg was discovered on the Seymour Island in the Antarctic and gives a fascinating insight into the old world.
This egg is comparable in size to an American football and is an impressive 66 million years old.
It is the first ever found egg in the Antarctic and the second largest ever discovered.
Only the long-extinct elephant bird from Madagascar lay larger eggs.
Scientific analyses show that this petrified egg once belonged to a huge sea lizard or snake creature that existed together with the dinosaurs.
The egg is currently in the National Museum of Natural History in Chile.
Rare whale
It is considered to be one of the last paradises for whales.
About eight species of whales permanently or temporarily stay in the cold waters around the Antarctic.
Thickly upholstered by fat layers, the huge sea lizards resist the ice-cold temperatures.
Buckle whales cycle seasonally between the Antarctic waters and warmer areas near the equator.
Dwarf whales prefer the Antarctic as a summer quarters and even the rare blue whales can still be found here.
By the way, the blue whale is the largest animal that has ever lived on earth.
However, due to the consequences of the whale catch, these animals have become highly decimated and shy.
Researchers suspect that there are only a few hundred specimens of them left.
Ice fish colony
If you can adapt, it's really good in the Antarctic.
Far from people, the noise of ship traffic and the pollutions of the waters, life blooms.
This is also proven by the ice fish, which form the largest known fish colony on earth.
Millions of them have found themselves on the seabed off the coast of the Antarctic.
Each pair has a nest on the ground and attracts young fish.
The colony first appeared on radar images and today we know that it covers several thousand square kilometers.
Mushrooms in the Antarctic
Mushrooms do not like the cold.
That's what researchers thought so far, but the Antarctic teaches scientists something completely new again.
The first Antarctic mushrooms are not just a special feature, because there are usually no mushrooms here.
On top of that, they have a habit that makes them unique.
These mushrooms eat petroleum.
The mushrooms were discovered in a hut that once served as protection for the discoverer Ernest Shackleton.
In the hut, some wood boxes and boards contaminated with petroleum were left behind.
And this wood is now the home of a completely new type of mushroom.
