Welcome to the comic miniseries, The Life of Captain Marvel. This is Issue 4 of 5.
At the end of the last issue, Captain Marvel, a.k.a. Carol Danvers, discovered that her mother was not a
regular New England girl as she had always thought, but a Kree warrior from the distant planet Hala.
Marie, whose real name is Mari-Ell, tells Carol how she was honored by the
Kree leadership for defending Hala and given a new undercover mission: to infiltrate Earth.
She was given the amulet of Pam’a which contains a cloaking
device so she could blend in with the human population.
But as Mari-Ell tells this story to her daughter, the Kree assassin appears, and
attacks. It throws Carol to the ground, and Marie goes to face it.
The two of them fight, causing an explosion that sends the assassin packing, for now.
That’s when Joe emerges from the damaged family home.
He sees his mother in Kree armor, and Marie reveals to him who she really is.
Carol didn’t get her powers from the psyche-magnetron explosion all those years ago; the explosion merely activated them.
Their life had not been an accident, as Marie tried to have her believe before.
Carol was exactly who she was meant to be.
Marie continues her story.
Her mission was not supposed to be to Boston, but she got blown off course and landed in the ocean.
She was rescued by a charming young fisherman named Joe.
The two of them hit it off immediately, and Marie slowly started to reconsider her undercover mission.
Joe was a widower with two young boys, and Marie found herself fitting into his life more and more.
Though she tried to tell herself that she was just assimilating, she knew she was falling for Joe.
One day, Marie finally told Joe who she really was, and why she was on Earth.
To her great shock, Joe said that he still wanted to
be with her, and the two of them got married.
It was then that she decided she wanted to become Mrs.
Joseph Danvers completely, and give up on her old life.
But the person Joe had fallen in love with was the warrior Mari-Ell.
The letters Carol had found were not written to some other woman, but
from Joe to his wife, asking her not to stop being Mari-Ell.
It was Mari-Ell whom the three children had seen that day on the boat, Kree armor and all.
But Marie didn’t want to be that person anymore.
After she had Carol, she wanted nothing but to be her mother and keep her safe.
She knew the only way she could do this was by turning her
back on the Kree empire and making sure they never found her.
She gave her tracker to Joe and asked him to turn it off.
That was the device that Carol had found and activated.
The family packed up and moved across the bay, and tried to give Carol as normal a childhood as possible.
But Carol’s growing curiosity about space and her desire to become an astronaut worried her father.
He wanted to keep her safe on Earth, which is why he constantly discouraged her.
On the night Carol ran away from home, the night her father told her he
wouldn’t pay for college, Marie was out pawning her wedding ring so she could give
her daughter an education. But by the time she got home, Carol was already gone.
Carol, Joe Jr. and Marie sit on the porch together, the truth about who
they are finally out, the trauma caused by Joe Sr. finally at an end.
But just as they breathe a sigh of relief, Joe is pulled up out his wheelchair.
The Kree assassin is back.
She tells Marie that, for the crime of treason against the Kree empire, she has been sentenced to death.
And that’s where the penultimate issue of Captain Marvel ends.
