Welcome to the comic miniseries, The Life of Captain Marvel. This is Issue 2 of 5.
After discovering a letter written by her deceased father for a secret lover,
Carol Danvers is trying to reckon with what this means for her family.
Thinking of her father Joe Sr.’s funeral, she contemplates how his actions are affecting his family even from the grave.
Although she is unaware of it, Carol had set off a
signal that went deep into space and awoke some strange being.
Now, it has made its way to the Earth to find the source of the signal.
Carol sits at the old donut shop and talks to her childhood friend Louis.
Louis tells her that she ought to tell her mother about the letter, but Carol
is afraid that her already strained relationship with her family will unravel if she does.
Louis assures Carol that her mother will understand, and comforts her.
Meanwhile, the alien has landed somewhere in Canada, and crossed paths with an unfortunate farmer.
The farmer tries to communicate with it, but ends up getting his face broken by it.
Back home, Carol finally plucks up the courage to tell her mother about the letter.
But her reaction is not what she expects.
Her mother takes her down to the water, and reveals to her that she didn’t want Carol to find
out about it like this, and that she wanted to tell her daughter everything in her own time.
Carol is shocked that her mother knew, and asks her why she constantly
defended her father when she was aware of everything he had done.
Her mother tells her that she is sorry, and she can never forgiver herself.
She tells Carol that her husband wasn’t perfect, but she still loved him.
She appears to blame herself for her husband being unhappy, and that is the last straw for Carol.
She has had enough, and prepares to leave.
But the alien is on its way to Maine, endangering Carol’s family.
Carol says goodbye to her comatose brother, but just as she tells him that
she loves him, he opens his eyes for the first time since the accident.
And that’s where this issue of The Life of Captain Marvel ends.
Join us next time, as Carol comes face to face with the creature that she accidentally summoned.
