The story you didn't know. Today, the Imjin Era was actually an international war.
This is a story about the Haegwi, the Tartar, and the Monkey Cavalry that participated in the Imjin Era.
Let's start with the most well-known Haegwi.
When you hear the name Haegwi, it feels like a ghost in the sea.
If there is a water ghost in a valley or a river, it sounds strange to say that there is a Haegwi in the sea.
But Haegwi means something completely different.
Haegwi means the black soldier who participated in the Imjin Era.
At that time, during the Imjin Era, Japan led 140,000 troops, and the whole country was talking about the Jeongyu disaster that invaded Joseon again in 1598.
Joseon was suffering from the invasion of the Japanese army, including the Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
Despite General Lee Soon-shin's declaration, Joseon continued to flee north.
Joseon continued to request reinforcements from Myung-nara.
It was judged that it was difficult to endure with our own strength.
Meanwhile, inside Myung-nara, opinions were divided on the dispatch of reinforcements from Joseon.
There were many concerns about whether to send reinforcements or not.
At this time, the commander of Myung-nara, Seok-sung, argued that the purpose of the Japanese army was to conquer Myung-nara, and that Joseon should stop the Japanese army.
He judged that Japan's invasion of Joseon was related to the invasion of Myung-nara.
As a result, the Myung-nara administration decided to dispatch troops to help Joseon to prevent the Japanese army from entering Myung-nara.
The predecessor visited the Myung-nara camp, which was stationed near Hanyang Doseong.
It was to give love to Peng Shing-go, the eldest son of the Myung-nara dispatcher.
As the drinking party was heating up, Peng Shing-go suddenly boasted to his predecessor and introduced himself.
He said,
Your Majesty, let me introduce you to a new recruit.
He is a man from Parang-guk at the southern end of the West Sea.
He has to cross the sea three times to reach the West Sea, and he has a history of 150,000 years with Joseon.
This man was good at shooting and had a lot of martial arts.
Parang-guk means Portugal here.
Portugal hired foreign mercenaries to run the colony.
At that time, Portugal was in control of the Macao Peninsula.
Myung-nara bought weapons and ammunition from Portugal and brought these mercenaries.
As you may have noticed, this new recruit is a black mercenary.
The officer followed him to the place where the king of the Joseon Dynasty was going.
Officers are people who write the history of the Joseon Dynasty, which we have often heard of.
This is also written in the preface.
Yellow eyes, black face, black all over his body.
His beard and hair are curly and short like a black sheep's hair.
When Sunjo showed interest, Peng Shing-go added an explanation.
This new recruit can attack the enemy by diving under the sea.
He also knows how to eat underwater creatures while in the water for days.
As Peng Shing-go's explanation became longer, Sunjo showed great interest.
Two days later, on May 28, Peng Shing-go officially introduced three Portuguese mercenaries to Sunjo.
Sunjo looked at their swordsmanship and gave one silver coin as a reward.
The mercenaries introduced by Peng Shing-go are considered to be a special force for Portugal, such as the Navy UDT.
In Joseon, the people who are good at diving are called the ghosts of the sea, or haegwi.
In Joseon, these Portuguese mercenaries were a subject of great interest.
Haegwi suddenly appeared in many documents in Joseon after the Jeongyujeran Incident.
Haegwi's impression of the mysterious race that suddenly appeared in many documents such as Nanchung, Jamnok, Seoyeji, and Mirollok.
There were 47,000 mercenaries.
There were four haegwi, but they were fat, dry, red eyes, and their hair was like cotton.
There was a tall person, but he was very tall, so he was almost two-kilometer tall.
He couldn't ride a horse, but he rode a cart.
There was a man named Haegwi.
He was from Nambon, and his eyes were black like iron, and he hid under the sea.
He said that he looked like a ghost, so he called him Haegwi.
The story of Haegwi's appearance drove Japan into terror.
There is also a record that Haegwi's appearance changed when he said he participated and prepared to withdraw.
Then what role did the black mercenary Haegwi play?
Did he hit the ball as much as he expected?
I don't think so.
According to the 23rd Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial History Book, Yoojung Dongjeong, this is the record.
It is said that General Myungnara Yoojung led dozens of types of haegwi.
Yoojung couldn't even hit a ball in the battle in Gyeongju.
Why didn't he let Haegwi go into the water, pierce the bottom of the ship, and sink?
To put it bluntly, Myungnara Yoojung couldn't even use Haegwi's talent properly and lost.
August 1598, three months after Peng Shing-goo introduced Haegwi.
Except for the fact that Haegwi's appearance was seen in the famous military camp of Namwon, Jeolla-do, there is no way to find a battle record.
The black mercenaries had a lot of expectations from the Joseon people, and they were left disappointed.
Although Haegwi couldn't hit the ball as much as he expected, we can see that it was a large-scale international war beyond the imagination of Im Jin-hye through this record.
Unusual mercenaries were not only Haegwi.
There is also the Tartar giant that I mentioned at the beginning.
At the time of Jeong Yoo-jae in 1598, the Japanese army in Sacheon, Gyeongsangnam-do, built a castle and defended the area.
At this time, the name of the castle was built by Sacheonseon Jilri Castle or a foreign army, so it is called Sacheonseon Jilri Wae Castle.
This castle is still in Sacheon.
If you've been to the army, you'll know about the soldiers.
There were soldiers at this time, too.
In other words, you can think of the soldiers as standing on the border of a region.
Anyway, one day, a foreign officer Shimazu was reported by a soldier.
A strange giant is breaking the castle with three sticks.
It's huge. His eyes are torn up and up.
His beard is divided into left and right, covering his face, so he looks scary.
Shimazu listens to this and calls the snipers to snipe the giants.
At that time, the snipers in the castle were the best snipers in Japan.
There were Danegashima people in Sasumabon Castle.
Danegashima people were the first to introduce muskets in Portugal.
The giants, which Chobyeong said, began to fall one by one in the gun.
As the giants were almost dead, the famous soldiers who followed them began to fall in the gun.
Eventually, the Light Alliance chose to retreat.
Japan was unable to retaliate against the soldiers of Joseon and Myungnara, and more than 7,000 people were killed.
According to Japanese records, the identity of these giants is the giant of Tatar.
Myungnara asked the powerful people of Tatar to support him before he went to war.
It means that the people who were chosen by Tatar are the giants of Tatar.
These giants also appear in Joseon documents.
Height and body are ten times better than ordinary people.
Of course, it's an exaggeration, but you can see that he's a giant.
There was also a monkey soldier who was still a mystery.
Monkey soldiers are estimated to be four types.
One is a soldier as agile as a monkey.
One is a soldier of a small ethnic group with a lot of hair.
One is a soldier in a monkey mask.
The last one is a real monkey.
Of course, I think it's one of the three, not a real monkey.
But if you look at the records of Imjin, it's not like that.
He led an army of 4,000 and hundreds of monkey soldiers to the end of the field under the bridge.
He watched the foreign troops build a dense ridge like a forest and climb from the mountain.
Just before the ridge was built, he released the monkey first.
The monkey rode a horse, held a whip, and rushed to the enemy.
When he first saw the monkey, he thought it was a human being, but it wasn't a human being.
He thought it was strange, so he stopped and looked at it.
As he approached the enemy, the monkey jumped from the horse to the enemy.
The foreign enemies tried to catch the monkey, but the monkey was good at hiding and running away, so he passed through the camp.
No matter how much I look at it, it looks like a real monkey.
This is also said in Namjoon's book, which is evaluated by the most detailed records related to Imjin.
There are four grasslands, so the skill of riding a horse was like love.
The body looks like a big cat.
The grassland from here is a monkey.
If it's a human being, there's no reason to say it was like love, so there's a lot of speculation that there was a real monkey.
But it's just a guess and nothing's been confirmed yet.
It's a story like a novel, but they all appeared in the Imjin War.
In addition, according to the records, soldiers from India, Thailand, Tibet, Myanmar, and Mongolia also appeared.
As I said at the beginning, the Imjin War also had an international war.
I don't think it appeared in the Imjin War that I learned at school.
We're going to cover a summary of the Imjin War, which we didn't know at school, so please look forward to it.
That's all for this episode of the story of the monkey cavalry, Hegi and Tatarge.
