Hi, do you sometimes feel shy when you speak English?
Or do you sometimes feel nervous when you start a conversation with foreigners who come from English-speaking countries?
Or do you feel that the world is gonna judge you if you don't say something correctly?
Or if you make a grammar mistake?
Or if you have a Vietnamese accent?
Many people who's learned this language has came across these feelings of shyness or nervousness
when speaking English with other people.
Have you ever felt that before?
I am not an exception.
I know I felt that when I first decided to go to an English club in Ho Chi Minh City 10 years ago
and there were about 15 people practicing English at the cafe.
I just sat down with them and, you know, for a couple of hours I just smiled and nodded
but I didn't understand what they were saying.
And I was so worried that someone would ask me a question and maybe I wouldn't know what to say.
There were a lot of things going on in my mind.
I am actually not a shy person but in that situation I was extremely shy.
I just wanted to fade away and go home.
So how to stop being shy or nervous and how to be more confident when speaking in English?
Today I wanna share with you 3 tips to overcome these feelings and boost your confidence
and improve your English fluency as well.
The 3 things that I did to learn the English language.
Tip number 1.
This tip is very simple and that is
don't be afraid of being judged by people around you when you make a grammar or pronunciation mistake
or when you have a strange accent.
It doesn't matter if you speak with a Vietnamese accent.
I still speak with a Vietnamese accent and I talk to hundreds of people every single year.
It doesn't matter.
Forget how they would judge you or how they think of you
and forget how they notice your grammar or pronunciation mistakes.
It doesn't matter.
Try to speak as much as possible with full of confidence.
If they don't understand, you say it again.
You just keep saying it.
It's ok, don't worry.
If you're always thinking about those stuff like
I am not good at English speaking
or I am afraid that they would misunderstand what I'm saying
or I will look stupid.
These things hold you back learning English.
So be positive, be confident and don't be afraid of being judged, ok?
Tip number 2. Use the imitation technique.
It means you copy exactly what native speakers say in an audio or video
and I found that that's a very very good way learning the language and building your confidence.
All you have to do is to listen to the tone and the intonation
in a native speaker's voice while they're saying.
There are three easy steps.
Let me show you.
Step 1. The first time you hear it, you just need to listen and read.
For example,
Step 2. You listen and imitate.
It means you listen and say it aloud.
Step 3. Listen and copy everything at the same time.
It means you need to listen to the speaker and speak at the same speed.
Let's try it.
If you practice this technique on a daily basis,
you'll sound more natural, more confident, more relaxed when you're speaking English.
Do it every single day.
Tip number 3. Prepare many questions to ask other people before you practice speaking English.
When you have a conversation and when you ask someone questions,
they are the one who's gonna be talking a lot.
If you ask questions that start with WH like who, when, where, what, etc.
For example,
What are you doing next week?
What do you do for a living?
Where do you live?
So, the other person is gonna say,
Well, I'm gonna do this, I'm gonna do that, I'm gonna travel,
I am a doctor, I live in New York City, and so on.
Then you can use their answers to ask more questions such as
How long have you been working as a doctor?
And how many people are there in your family?
Who do you live with? etc.
By asking questions, you are controlling the conversation.
So, prepare a lot of questions before you practice speaking English.
Alright, those are 3 tips I wanna share with you today.
Now, let me summarize what we discussed.
Tip number 1. Be positive, be confident and don't be afraid of being judged.
Tip number 2. Using the imitation technique.
Tip number 3. Prepare many questions before you practice speaking English with other people.
And that's the end of the video.
Thanks for watching and see you next time.
