Well in today's midday fix he's a culinary icon and Food Network host Bobby
Flay has a new show called The Flay List where he teams up with his daughter
Sophie to visit some of their favorite spots in New York City and sure enough
we've got Bobby and Sophie Flay joining us live from the Food Network kitchen in
New York City. Good morning to you guys. Hi so tell me about the inspiration
behind this show because this is a new one this is a whole new idea right?
You do it Sophie. You clean up the show. Okay fine. All right so basically the
concept is we we did six episodes all in New York City and we picked six real
iconic dishes so tacos, fried chicken, lobster roll, burgers, etc. The first
episode is all about tacos so I took Sophie to a place that she's been to
before. It's a place I've been eating tacos. It's my favorite taqueria in New
York City and then she flips the script on me after we eat those tacos and she's
like I'm gonna take you to a place you haven't been. That's kind of new, hip,
different approach to tacos and and then she takes me to that place so I'm always
kind of like surprised as to where I'm going but it's it's a great way to it
shows the viewer a couple things. First of all let's in lift the viewer in a
little bit on on our relationship and as as father and daughter and and and
and let's just let them let's them in on you know how we decide on what to eat
and our approach to that but then also like different approaches to the actual
dish itself. Right and what about your taste in food specifically Sophie like
do you guys have completely different tastes or are you pretty similar? No I
would say we're very similar. My dad has always taught me to kind of love big
bold flavors so we definitely have similarities in that but you know his
places that he takes me to are a little bit older. The places I take him to are a
little bit fresher, a little bit hipper so we're putting a little spin on it.
Fresher. He's already he's already given it to you. Have you taken him to any
place yet? I'm gonna ask you to like give us a little tease here where he
you change his mind he went all right Sophie you got something here. I think I
think actually you'll see that in in our in our first episode at Oshimoko I think
you'll you'll see that you know he didn't he didn't really know what to
expect. No no but I she took me to some great places for sure. Even like and to
me the biggest surprise I'm a New Yorker I'm a native New Yorker you know how we
feel about our pizza here. I know how you guys feel about your pizza in Chicago
but Sophie took me to a place that's making Detroit style pizza which I had
never had before. Have you had Detroit style pizza? I've never even heard of that. Neither did I. I didn't know it was a thing.
But I have to tell you something. No it's a it's definitely a thing. It's happening. Detroit is
coming on strong in the pizza department. Tough to break into New York City
Detroit style but I have to say I was really impressed by by Sophie's Choice.
That's really cool. Hey tell me about cooking in general. Do you guys do that
together as well or are you just like kind of burnt out on it once once you're
done working? He does a lot of the cooking and I do a lot of the eating. I do all the cooking. That's a great relationship. That's really how our relationship goes. Exactly. So what about she's um when she when
Sophie was a kid she would say to me like all right dad I want you to teach me
how to do something today. Teach me how to bake this kind of cake. So like I
remember one time was a red velvet cake and we went shopping together and we
bought all the ingredients and we got back to the kitchen and literally like I
took the mixer out and she went upstairs and put her bathing suit on and she went
in the pool and never saw her again. So I had to bake the cake. There was lots of moments like that. You're my kind of girl Sophie. I love it. So tell me what do you make in this summer?
Like what are you telling him to make this summer Sophie for you while you're
swimming? Well I mean we're making a lot of tacos that's that's kind of you're
still on the taco beat. Uh-huh. Yeah. Yes actually my the um the placemat at my
house actually says you better have tacos. At the front door. Yes exactly.
Tacos are is our is our is our go-to especially in the summer. I'm making a
lot of fish tacos. We're making some today. Obviously as you know we're
getting into the last month of summer here I can't believe it but fish tacos
is definitely my go-to. We're making some grilled mahi-mahi tacos. It's really
important to use to serve lots of different condiments, salsas, relishes, hot
sauces, slaws and of course some warm tortillas and and then I make a taco bar.
I just let everybody kind of make their own taco and then you know they
customize it the way they want to do it and then it gets the cook out of the
kitchen. I love it. It looks so good. Hey guys we want to tell people if they want
