In this episode, Shen Yun perfomer/instructor William Li gives us a rundown of his action-packed schedule back at home base.
The day kickstarts with some pre-sunrise training as warmup. Then, Will and his company have classical Chinese dance training, followed by a tumbling session. During lunch break, Sam, Will and Co. attack homegrown ghost peppers—the ghost peppers get the last laugh. After a leisurely outdoor photoshoot, it's back to the physical stuff: tornado kicks and conditioning. The workday is wrapped up with one final rehearsal session. Will drives home and winds down with a typical Shen Yun member routine: meditation and readings on moral improvement. William finally hits the hay. Tomorrow's another epic day.

Why do you guys do this?
Hey, welcome back, we're the 3 Musketeers!
And we're ShunYun Performers, my name is William.
I'm Sam.
I'm Jisung.
Follow our channel if you want to see
what the lives of ShunYun dancers are really like.
In this video, we're gonna show you
what our day looks like when we're not performing.
Let's go!
Good morning!
I've got some coffee to start the day off.
Our schedule starts at 9am,
so I have to get to the studio before that.
Some of the other dancers are actually in the studio
as early as 6am,
and they're already stretching and warming up and practicing.
This is what we call
morning training.
My classical Chinese dance teacher once told me
when he was younger,
there's only three places that he would go to.
One is his bedroom,
two is the studio,
and three is the cafeteria.
All day, he would just be in these three locations,
and that just goes to show
how demanding classical Chinese dance really is.
Hey, we just arrived at the studio,
and I'll show you what our training looks like.
The first thing we do is kick 300 times.
100 to the front,
100 to the back,
and 100 to the side.
Classical Chinese dance has its own training
in basic skills,
postures,
technical moves,
and more.
It's an extensive and independent dance system,
the product of 5,000 years of Chinese culture
passed down through the people,
in imperial courts,
and through ancient plays.
That was a bit of what our fundamental training looks like.

Okay, we just finished dance class,
and now it's tumbling time!
Let's go!
In classical Chinese dance,
these tumbling movements are called
meaning
They originate from classical Chinese dance
and have an ancient history,
evolving from Chinese martial arts and opera.
One of the biggest difficulties that I had
when I was practicing tumbling before
is overcoming my fear.
It is pretty dangerous,
and when you're flipping,
you have to be very clear-headed.
You're actually a lot more capable than you think.
So a lot of the times,
it's actually a mental block,
and you just have to overcome that.
Check this out!
Hey, it's lunch time!
So we're gonna eat,
and we'll see you guys later!
Later!
After lunch,
we do a little bit of stretching.
Vertical splits for 8 minutes,
and horizontal splits for another 8 minutes.
Then, we have some free time.
Sam is usually editing our YouTube videos.
Jisung is in graduate school,
and you'll find him in the library studying.
I spend this time thinking about
combinations for dance class.
And sometimes,
we're also just fooling around in the studio.
Like when we tried eating ghost peppers
straight from our friend's garden.
My tongue hurts like crazy!
My tongue burns like crazy!
Why you guys do this?
No, I can't take it.
My heart cannot take it.
Kim, why?
Why'd you egg me on,
and you're not eating it, huh?
I didn't egg you on!
Sam, vote!
If you wanna see Kim eat
what she didn't eat this time,
subscribe and like, okay?
Thank you.
Hey guys.
Photoshoot, photoshoot!
Yeah, we're doing a scarf photoshoot today.
Shin Yoon scarves!
Yeah!
Buy one!
Very nice quality, very soft.
Kim doesn't know how to wear a scarf.
Looking good, guys.
You look great.
How's my pose going?
Well, looking good, man.
Alright guys, so we finished the shoot.
How do you feel?
Oh, great.
I think we did well.
Yeah, it was one of our first times,
so a little bit different.
But I think it was good.
Right now, it's 7.10,
and we're going to do a little bit of training
before our rehearsals.
What we usually do is 100 tornado kicks,
50 butterfly kicks,
and also some core training.
Hey Sam, we're doing training,
so why are you wearing like so much?
Alright guys, the reason I wear so much
is to lose some weight.
Does that really work?
I wonder.
It does, because if you lose the water,
you lose the weight.
But you're losing the water,
it's not you're losing the fat.
And after that, rehearsal starts.
Every year,
Xinyun produces an all-new performance
and tours with it around the world.
So, we spent a lot of time rehearsing.
Okay, see ya.
Good night.
Hello, we just finished our rehearsals,
and now I'm heading home.
And I'll see you guys there.
There are a few more things I usually do
before heading to bed.
And I like to listen to a podcast while showering.
What I've been listening to recently is
传统文化.
It's a podcast in Chinese
about traditional Chinese culture.
So after showering,
it's time to do a little bit of work.
And I'm going to start editing
the video that you're watching right now.
Before going to sleep,
there are two more things I usually do.
And the first is to do a little bit of reading.
The artists of the past believe that
to create art that truly uplifts,
they must first cultivate goodness.
They seek virtue
and value self-discipline and selflessness.
That's why before going to bed,
I do a bit of reading and self-reflection.
Meditating before bed
is also an important part of my nighttime routine.
I sleep better
and feel more focused and energetic the next day.
If you're curious on the specific
meditational exercise I'm doing,
check the link in the description below.
Now it's time to finally go to sleep.
Good night.
That was a look at
what a Xinyun dancer's training is like.
Finally, on our day off,
we like to go out and take a well-deserved break.
By the way, let us know,
would you choose to be a dancer
if you had the chance?
So we had a long week
and now it's the weekend
and we're having a meal with friends.
All right, you guys,
I hope you enjoyed that video
and tell us what you think in the comments below, okay?
And don't forget to like and subscribe.
See you guys next time.
