In today's video, you will find out what your eyes can say about your health.
A new study in the United Kingdom found that dry eye disease can lead to other general health issues. Did you know that?
According to the National Eye Institute, almost 16 million Americans suffer from dry eyes. The Association of Optometrists of London says that one in every four people in the United Kingdom has this disease.
The study from the University of Southampton revealed that patients with chronic dry eyes tend to have a lower quality of life.
These findings showed that people with dry eyes report a decline in visual function and work productivity. They also have more difficulty completing daily tasks.
But you must be asking yourself: what is dry eye disease?
Dry eyes happen when your eyes don't produce enough tears or produce low-quality tears.
Although dry eyes are uncomfortable, there are many treatments available.
Common symptoms include irritation and redness in the eyes, blurry view, rough or burning sensation, extreme sensitivity to light, eye pain, stringy mucus inside or around the eyes.
Other common symptoms are watery eyes and pain when wearing contact lenses.
The causes for dry eyes are diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid and lupus, exposure to smoke, wind or dry weather, wearing contact lenses for long periods, and staring too long into computer or phone screens.
Another cause for dry eyes seems to be being more than 65 years, especially for women.
So, according to this research, your eyes can tell a lot more about your health than you thought.
If you have dry eyes, seek an ophthalmologist to help you in the best way possible.

The study, from the University of Southampton, revealed that patients with chronic dry eyes

These findings showed that people with dry eyes reported decline in visual function and
work productivity.
They also have more difficulty completing daily tasks.
According to the researchers, millions of people suffer from this condition, being one
of the main complaints during eye checks.
People of all ages can have dry eyes disease, but they are more common in women and the
elderly.
Researchers estimate that around one-third of adults above 65 years have this disease.
Do you know anyone who does?
However, the real number is probably higher, since there are no official diagnostic tests.
Besides that, people with light symptoms many times don't seek medical help.

But you must be asking yourself, what is dry eye disease?
Dry eyes happen when your eyes don't produce enough tears or produce low-quality tears.
These tears dry quickly, leaving the frontal part of the eyes dry and irritated.
Sometimes the eyes produce extremely watery tears to compensate for the issue, but these
tears dry faster and cause the sensation of sand in the eyes.
Although dry eyes are uncomfortable, there are many treatments available.
Common symptoms include irritation and redness in the eyes, blurry view, rough or burning
sensation, extreme sensitivity to light, eye pain, stringy mucus inside or around the eyes.
Other common symptoms are watery eyes and pain when wearing contact lenses.
The causes for dry eyes are diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid and lupus, exposure
to smoke, wind, or dry weather, wearing contact lenses for long periods, and staring too long
into computer or phone screens.
Another cause for dry eyes seems to be being more than 65 years old, especially for women.
According to the research published in the BMJ Open magazine, people with dry eye disease
have more mobility issues, lower productivity in work, more difficulty completing daily
chores.
They also have more chances of having anxiety and depression compared to those who don't
have dry eyes.
Participants with dry eyes were more prone to suffering from other comorbidities, says
Dr. Parvez Hossain, associate professor in ophthalmology at the University of Southampton,
and the main author of the research.
They had twice the arthritis, hearing loss, or irritable bowel syndrome than people without
any symptoms.
Although it is still early to make any causal associations with this study, having dry eyes
seems to affect the general health and the quality of life related to vision.
So, according to this research, your eyes can tell a lot more about your health than
you thought.
If you have dry eyes, seek an ophthalmologist to help you in the best way possible.
