Take a look at all the action leading up to the heartbreaking moment as Alex Cobb's no-hitter streak came to an end by Spencer Steer with 2 outs in the ninth inning as the San Francisco Giants went on to defeat the Cincinnati Reds, 6-1. #Sport #Alex
Alex Cobb has been around for a while.
Came up with the Rays in 2011, played for them,
and then for the Orioles and the Angels
before joining the Giants.
It's been a solid starter, but never a star.
Some nights, though, things just all come together,
or they almost do.
Yeah, I mean, Tuesday, Alex Cobb
was trying to do something no Giants pitcher has
done since 2015.
Giants hosting the Reds in San Francisco.
Here we go.
There is the man of the hour and the night.
On the bomb top of the third, Giants lead 2-0.
Nick Senzel on the ground, Casey Schmidt.
The throw to first, a little high.
Senzel reaches safely.
Originally, Senzel was awarded a hit,
but it would be changed to an error by Schmidt.
And that took place in the top of the third.
Bottom of the third now, Giants up 3-0,
one on for Patrick Bailey.
Straight away, TJ Friedel goes on to make the catch,
but just falls out of his glove, and it's a two-run home run.
Oh, the frustration.
So close.
So the Giants have built a 5-0 lead.
Yikes.
Top of the fifth now, same score.
Oh, what about Alex Cobb, you're wondering?
Well, he hasn't allowed a hit.
Cobb gets Tyler Stephenson swinging at the splitter,
and then he'll get Christian Encarnaci on strand,
swinging at the splitter as well.
Cobb with 5K, score with the splitter.
He now is through 5.
Top of the seventh, same score.
Cobb still with a no-no, two out.
He gets Nick Martini to ground out to the first baseman
who flips to Cobb for the out.
Cobb now through seven without allowing a hit.
You can feel the tension.
Top of the eighth, same score.
Cobb still working, two out.
Will Benson, the blooper.
The diving catch.
We were all like, did he catch it?
Did he catch it?
Yeah, he caught it.
It was incredible to keep the no-hitter alive.
Cobb was fired up.
He's now through eight.
When you're a no-hitter, you need plays like this sometimes.
Oh, you always do.
All right, ninth inning, here we go.
Can he do it?
Alex Cobb coming in with no hits on 113 pitches.
First batter, Marte, flies out on the first pitch.
He sees.
That's one out, two to go.
All right, two batters later, TJ Frito flies out to right.
Is it going to be this easy for Alex Cobb?
Two outs.
All right, take a deep breath, everybody.
Next batter, Spencer Steer.
Contact.
Oh, not a chance for Luis Matos to get it.
Right over his head.
That's a hit.
No no-hitter.
But what an effort for Alex Cobb.
Unbelievable.
