Lunar New Year is the most important holiday in Vietnam. All families in Vietnam are busy to prepare carefully for Tet and complete the must-to-do activities during Tet as follows:
* Decorating houses with: cherry blossoms, kumquat trees and the New Year’s tree. It is believed that these plants and flowers will bring Spring colors, luck and take all the evils away.
* Making Chung cake: Chung cake is the traditional one originated from Hung Emperor. It represents the gratitude of offspring to their ancestors and homeland. The main ingredients of Chung cake are sticky rice, green beans, pork and Dong leaves. Chung cake must be boiled for 12 hours.
* Five-fruit tray: a not-to-be-missed traditional item during the Tet holiday in Vietnam. Five-fruit tray displayed as offerings during Tet holiday is a symbol of the offspring’s filial piety towards their ancestors and their wishes for a lucky new year.
Five-fruit tray represents five basic elements (metal, wood, water, fire and earth) which integrated into minds of Vietnamese people since ancient times, therefore often includes five kinds of fruits with different colors. Five-fruit tray of Sunny Vietnam is the one that was popular in the Northern in the subsidy period, including: bananas, pomelos, mandarins, Thien Phien apples, and chilies.
However, Sunny Vietnam has some changes made as replacing chilies with dragon fruit – a red kind of fruit that represents fortune and is familiar to Vietnam.
* The dinner meal on the 30th day of Lunar December: Such meal is more lavish than on usual days to respectfully offer to Ancestors. Additionally, this is also the reunion meal of many Vietnamese families. On the 30th of Lunar December, Vietnam Sunny prepares the Northern traditional meal with boiled chicken, pickled onion, dried bamboo shoot soup, fried pie, fried spring rolls, etc.
