Saponaria, commonly known as the soap plant, has a legacy that spans generations.

Brilliant in clusters of delicate pink or white flowers, the Saponaria captivates with its understated elegance. Its name derives from the Latin 'sapo', an ode to the frothy lather that can be conjured from its roots. Since ancient times, discerning minds have recognised the alchemical gift of this plant, transforming ordinary water into a purifying elixir. In fact, it is the saponins it contains, a group of natural surfactants, that give it this remarkable property.

The soapwort has made its mark on human history as a cultivated companion, with evidence of its cultivation dating back to the Neolithic period. Due to the surfactant properties of its constituents, extracts from the rhizomes and roots were used as a substitute for soap until the 19th century. Consequently, soapwort was cultivated in Europe until the beginning of the 20th century. Even today, in Slovakia, pieces of cut rhizomes are still soaked in cloth for washing. Today, conscientious companies and individuals alike turn to soapwort solutions for environmentally friendly endeavours, using it for tasks such as cleaning carpets and upholstery. In the meticulous realm of restoration workshops, Soapwort solutions reign supreme for the delicate cleaning of historic textiles and furnishings, testifying to the enduring legacy of this unassuming botanical marvel.

Beneath its unassuming exterior lies a wealth of botanical wisdom. Its roots have been used in traditional medicine for their diuretic and expectorant properties. Since ancient times, these botanicals have been used as mucolytic agents in cases of bronchitis characterised by persistent, dry secretions. Tailored formulations have been developed for this purpose. It is important to note, however, that like all saponin-rich herbs, soapwort can cause emesis when administered in high doses, demonstrating its mild toxicity.

The little soap-flower was filmed by Simone Schlegel, the video was edited by Wenjing Ma.
