Tre Cime, Italy — Rounding the Icon of Italian Dolomites
June 4th, 2023 — TRE CIME which translates as "Three Battlements" was once the border between Austro-Hungarian Empire and Italy, and during the Great War (WWI) it became the fighting front line between the two armies. A lot of trails in this area are remnants of the war. The mountains were militirized with labyrinths of caves, tunnels, bunkers, and trenches, many of which are visible from trails to this day. After the war, in 1918 this part of Southern Tyrol was ceded to Italy. To this day signs and titles in this region are presented in both languages, with German often as first.
We arrived at the parking lot around 4pm, tired from previous day of skiing in Austria. Storm was moving in. We knew the following day will be a rainy day, and so we were left with a choice of hiking it in the storm, or not hiking it at all. After a short rest in the parking lot, we headed out onto the trail. Hikers we were meeting, were in good mood even though they all said they have not seen anything during the entire hike -- they havent seen the peaks, havent seen any views. We coninued none the less. This is how it went....
