Practitioners of Falun Dafa, also know as Falun Gong, are holding commemoration ceremonies annually to mark and peacefully protest against the persecution by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) that began on July 20, 1999 because the practice had attracted tens of millions of followers in China by that time. The CCP perceived Falun Gong as an ideological threat as its teachings advocate truthfulness, compassion and tolerance that are diametrically opposite to the CCP's values of class struggle, deception and violence. Countless numbers of practitioners have lost their lives due to the persecution, which continues to the present (July 2023).
