Congratulations to the new Wimbledon champion himself, Carlos Alcarez.
Good morning, Carlos. Congratulations.
Good morning. Thank you very much.
I just can't overstate how exciting this was for for tennis fans,
for you to defeat Novak Djokovic at his prime center court.
Wimbledon in five sets.
How did you hold it together? How did you not lose your nerve?
You know, it's tough to simulate, you know, what I've done yesterday.
It was a dream come true for me, you know,
defeat Novak the way that I did in the center court.
He was unbeaten for 10 years.
So it was it was tough to deal with the nerves,
you know, facing Novak in that stage.
But I'm really glad that I did.
Well, Carlos, let's take it back to the very first set.
Novak had you on the first set.
It was six to one.
It looked like this whole tournament may be a yawn.
And then you came roaring back.
What did you tell yourself after that first set?
Well, it was, you know, I thought that
place to increase the level a little bit and,
you know, entertain the crowd that had been in this final.
And please, not being so fast in the final.
But at the same time, you know, I thought that they were playing great.
I knew that they were going to have my chances,
just try to stay close in the score,
play my best, you know.
Yeah, I'm really, really glad
that I was able to win the second set, because
if not, probably I could have lost, you know, in straight sets.
So I just think I just believe in myself all the time.
When I made believers of everyone, Carlos, you dug deep.
I mean, there was one game in the third set that lasted longer than a whole set.
And talk about pressure.
You have royalty in the stands as well.
You have, of course, Prince William and Princess Kate, but your own king
right there watching you.
Did you kind of have to push that out of your mind or were you aware of all that?
Well, I was not thinking about it.
Well, at least I tried not to think about it.
But, you know, sometimes it's difficult, you know, to stay away from that.
It's your own, well, it's the Spanish king
watching you, supporting you.
There are a lot of times that I, you know,
see him during the match, you know, after points.
And he was cheering, like he
started to say vamos, you know, to me.
Every time that I win, it's something crazy, you know.
But yeah, it, you know, gives you some some nerves,
you know, knowing that the royalties are watching you.
Well, the king of Spain is your good luck charm because you won and you won big.
Tell us finally, Carlos, about your dad.
I mean, what does that mean? What does this mean to him?
He started you playing tennis when you were just four years old.
This was his dream come true, too.
Well, yeah, thanks.
Thanks to him, I started playing tennis.
You know, he he has been involved, you know, in the tennis world
his whole life, you know.
And he was yeah, he was dreaming about being professional.
He couldn't, you know, watching his his son, you know,
living his dream, his own dream.
But at the same time, you know, my my my father dream as well.
It was it's amazing for him as well.
I'm really glad, you know, to to have him with me living, living his
his dream as well, watching all the tennis players.
You know, it's something that I I'm really glad to share with him.
Wrote your name into the history books, Carlos.
Thank you so much. Congratulations again.
And we'll see you here in New York for the US Open.
Thank you very much. See you there.
Congrats. Wow.
Can we just say, wow, that is I mean, I just kind of can't
believe it. I was like, I mean, you know how good he is.
But this is not his favorite surface.
He's so young. He's facing a legend.
Yes. Center court Wimbledon.
It goes five sets.
Now, I honestly didn't believe he could pull it off until like the last point.
Wow. It's like he's going to do it for me.
Is that last question to ask about his father?
Yeah. Seeing all of them rally around beautiful.
