In the realm of mycology (the study of fungi) amateurs play a vital role. The Philadelphia Mycology Club is one of over a hundred mycology clubs across the United States that hunt for fungi for personal enjoyment and scientific use. Mushrooms, they will tell you eagerly, are a necessary and magical species, fundamental to our way of life.
