In this poem, William Wordsworth pours out his heart on a grave change that has just taken place in his life - the falling out of his dear friend, fellow poet and lover, Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It is generally agreed that Coleridge had travelled to the sunny Mediterranean island of Malta (from the gloomy England!) to cure his addiction to opium, which has had a significant impact on his health.
