Let's start with the big transfer story we've been talking about here on Sky Sports News. Mason Mount
and his impending move to Manchester United. David, I want to start with you on this one because
you've been leading the way on this particular transfer story. Just tell us about Manchester
United's pursuit because it's had some twists and turns hasn't it? Give us some insight.
To say the least and it all relates back to Mason Mount not agreeing a new contract with Chelsea.
That's pretty surprising given that he's been at the club pretty much his whole career
and he's played such a fundamental role in recent times but as the contract situation rumbled on
interest started to gather pace from other clubs and for a long time it was Liverpool who seemed
to be leading the race. Arsenal entered it. There was interest from Thomas Tuchel on behalf of
Bayern Munich but Manchester United was the club that Mount leaned towards joining and once that
was the case it was down to the clubs really to agree a fee. That was not easy despite him having
a year to go on his contract. Chelsea wanted 70 million plus 10 million in add-ons. Manchester
United started this sort of bidding in the 40s I think it was but they've managed bit by bit to come
to a fairly amicable agreement in talks that have taken place right up until today and it's going to
be 50 million sorry 55 million pounds with 5 million pounds in add-ons making it a 60 million
package but those 5 million pounds in add-ons are pretty difficult to achieve and if Manchester
United do achieve them then they'll be absolutely delighted to pay it so I'd expect a medical early
next week personal terms in place and it's going to be one of the big transfers of the summer
dividing opinion of course among fans of both clubs.
Jonathan the star of focusing on this one as well Mace Chase Over is their headline in your view
who's getting the better deal here is it Manchester United or is it Chelsea? United for certain I mean
Chelsea I've said this before you know I think it's a kind of an indictment of Chelsea's chaos
and you know the shambolic way in which the club has been run particularly over the last kind of
12 months that they are losing one of their homegrown stars you know a hero of the club
you know one who has performed well for them who is you know a real favourite with the fans that
they can't find a way to keep him on and you know and build a team around him is kind of
you know I think it says a lot about where Chelsea are that he sees United as the more stable
long-term option. United are getting a player who is still young like David says who is
an international who can play in lots of different roles you know a 10, an 8, a wide
he's got incredible work rate incredible you know incredible defensive work rate
a great attitude and you know a versatile player who you know Eric ten Hag will certainly feel
contained to the next level. David do you think Chelsea fans will be concerned about this a
homegrown player who's you know grown up with Chelsea been a key part of the squad over
recent years leaving I mean does it take a little bit of the heartbeat away from Chelsea Football
Club? I think many of the fans will think so he was the provider of the goal that won them the
Champions League and he's enjoyed many successful times with them however this feels like it's been
inevitable for quite some months now so they've had a little bit of time to get their head around
it it will be strange seeing him put pen to paper on a contract spanning five years plus an additional
option year with Manchester United and running out at Old Trafford he'll get a full pre-season
under his belt now by the looks of it they didn't want to have him coming back for pre-season at
Chelsea if this move was going to go through and Chelsea fans they're just going to have to get
their head around it it's a pretty remarkable amount of money to get for a player with a year
left on his contract who had not played much this season because of this calendar year at least
because of injury undoubtedly a really top player for club and country though and it would largely
be about how Chelsea look to replace him now because they're on a rebuilding mission he was
zero in their financial accounts so it's pure profit for Chelsea it really helps them out
with their financial fair play situation there's been so much conversation about that
but look they're being linked now with Moises Caicedo and various other players for a more
advanced role what we're seeing at Chelsea is just unrecognizable from what they were not so
long ago since the takeover the new ownership has been working hard in the market a lot of
ins a lot of outs and yeah I think it's a bittersweet moment for Chelsea supporters but
it will largely depend on what comes in and how Maurizio Pochettino gets the team playing because
recently they've become accustomed to not seeing Mount in the team
due to injury and that's going to be the case now for the future.
