Victor Wembanyama is already turning San Antonio to Wemb-Antonio ahead of Draft night. For SportsCenter, Marty Smith visits a local barber shop that honors Spurs legends with specialty haircuts.
We had to go to the city that is expected to be the new home for Victor, San Antonio, Texas.
Nothing like going from Paris to San Antonio.
That is where our Marty Smith is standing by live in a barbershop.
The one and only Marty Smith.
Please explain yourself, Marty.
Sage, good afternoon.
That's right.
It is San Antonio, but on this day, it is Wimbantonio.
This city is on fire for Victor Wimbanyama.
And it's interesting because we learned about a week ago
that a Spurs fan had gotten Wimbanyama's likeness carved in his hair.
The reason why is this gentleman right here, Mr. Joe Barber.
He's done countless Spurs and countless Spurs fans' heads.
What are some of the players that you've carved into fans' heads?
Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, Matt Bonner.
I mean, you name it.
Kawhi Leonard, even Popovich has popped up on somebody's head.
This week, it is all about Victor Wimbanyama.
And I will tell you, as I made my way down here to San Antonio,
we made the decision, you know what?
I think we should maybe go check that out ourselves.
It's been 26 years since the Spurs had the number one pick.
Of course, that was Tim Duncan back in 1997.
And they have that right once again this evening.
So here we are at Mr. Joe Barber's lab
so that I could have the opportunity to understand just how good he is at this masterpiece.
And I've been in this chair for two hours, Sage, two hours to get this amazing haircut.
And I've not seen it yet.
I can't wait to see what it looks like.
Okay, a couple things.
First of all, I'm trying really hard not to focus on those really super tight jean shorts
you just walked in.
I know you like my jorts, Sage.
No, I'm offended, frankly.
But fortunately, we're from...
No, the cowboy boots are fine.
The jorts, no, we're going to keep it from waist up now.
Thank you, Marty.
It's 105 degrees, Sage.
If I just went with Wranglers, I would be dying right now.
No, that should be illegal.
Stop it.
Okay, Mr. Joe Barber is incredibly talented.
And I am dying to see what he has done now to Marty Smith's head.
That makes two of us, my friend.
All right, Joe, show me.
Okay, you have to show them what you've done.
I've not seen it yet.
What is in the back of my head right now, Joe?
You got a portrait of Wim Biyama in the back of your head.
A portrait of Victor Wim Biyama in the back of my head.
I understand you've also made me the greatest company man in the history of ESPN,
as I have the ESPN logo as well.
You've been doing this since 1992 when you made your little brother your first canvas
and put what, the Dream Team logo in his head?
Yes.
All right, well, I'll tell you what, I am grateful.
Now, I have one more thing that I need to share with you, Sage,
and that is I've done some crazy things for ESPN.
You know this, my friend.
I have done back flips off of 10 meter high dives.
I have wrestled steer.
I have done some really ridiculous things.
This is way up there, and there's an added addendum here,
aside from the jorts and the big Texas Forever belt buckle.
I am officiating my sister-in-law's wedding in nine days.
No, you're not.
I am sorry, Andrea.
I love you, but we're going to be...
Victor Wim Biyama is now invited to my sister-in-law's wedding.
I don't know.
I might be uninviting you to officiate my wedding if I'm your sister.
And that's no offense to Mr. Joe Barber, who is extremely talented.
By the way, it looks like a tattoo as well.
I mean, how long is that going to stay?
I think it's going to last about a week,
according to my friends here in the barbershop who've also done this.
It should last about a week.
We'll see.
My hair grows fast.
I have one of those chia pet heads.
So I don't know how long I'm looking at this,
but I will tell you, I would imagine this evening
when I'm downtown at the draft party,
a lot of people are going to want to take some selfies with me.
Well, the back of my head anyway.
Yeah.
Cheers, my friends.
Texas forever, Sage.
Just the back of your head.
I got to say, Victor Wim Biyama,
definitely the most popular man in San Antonio tonight.
Marty Smith, it's a close second.
That is a thing of beauty.
Please tell Mr. Joe Barber, wow, awesome stuff.
And yes, he's a great company.
Everybody's very impressed, Joe.
We appreciate it.
Oh, it's my pleasure.
Welcome to Texas.
