Hey guys, Angel here. Today I just got back from the grocery store where I found some
really great organic drumettes and it reminded me of the time when I was back
in Taiwan visiting and some of my fondest fondest memories would be of us
eating meals family style. Now one of my favorite family style dishes whenever we
would go out to eat would be three cup chicken and in Mandarin also known as
So in honor of my favorite family style dish I'm going to show you guys how to
make three cup chicken at home. Now for the fresh ingredients. We'll need about
one to one and a half pounds of chicken drumettes. I like the organic kind. We'll
also need 15 to 20 cloves of garlic. I love garlic so I'm gonna use more in
this recipe. A small piece of ginger which we will end up slicing up and last
but not least fresh basil. Now we'll need the other ingredients which I call
our staple ingredients and for staple ingredients I just mean the ingredients
that you have at home either in your fridge or just kind of your dry
ingredients. So what we'll need is we'll need 1 3rd cup of soy sauce and right
now I'm using low-sodium soy sauce because I like to be a little bit more
health-conscious. The less salt the better. After that I'll need 1 3rd rice
wine and then 1 3rd sesame oil. You can either use regular sesame oil or dark
sesame oil but this will give the chicken a really good sesame flavor. Now
after you have those three ingredients here you want to add in your sugar. I've
got dried chili flakes and some salt. Give that a stir. Now this will be our
sauce. Alright so now what we want to do is we want to heat up our wok and when
that's heated up I'm gonna go ahead and add a little bit of oil and this is for
browning the chicken. So once that's hot we're gonna go ahead and add my garlic
and the ginger. I'm gonna give that a quick stir to get the fragrance out and
once that's cooked we'll go ahead and we'll add the chicken. What we want to do
is we want to let the chicken brown. Once the chicken browns then we'll go ahead
and add the sauce. Okay now I'm gonna add in our sauce mixture. Make sure to get all
the sugar in there that's the good stuff. So now what we're gonna do is we're just
gonna let it simmer down and once it simmers down the sauce is gonna get
thicker and richer and with that sesame oil it's gonna be very glossy and
beautiful. It usually takes about 20 minutes for it to reduce down but you'll
see the sauce start to thicken after about five to ten minutes. As you can
already see it's evaporating here. It already smells yummy. I can't wait. One of the
things that I like to serve with three cup chicken is white rice. You can use brown
rice or jasmine rice whichever you prefer but also I do typically three cup
chicken along with the side of vegetables bok choy, lettuce, just a
simple garlic stir-fry vegetable because this already has so much flavor.
You just need some vegetable to go with and balance the meal out. Okay so we're
almost done. What I'm gonna do is I'm gonna turn the heat down. Looking really good. I'm
gonna add the basil. Got the basil in there. Give it a quick stir.
Really starting to thicken up. Look how glossy that is. It's so beautiful. I'm just gonna
cover it up. Got it covered and we're gonna let it sit there for about a
minute. So delicious. So yummy. I love garlic so every bit of garlic clove is
gonna go in this dish. I've got to brush my teeth afterwards. Let's turn the fan
off. Great. So this is the three cup chicken dish and as you can see it's
very yummy looking. So there you have it. That's how you can make Taiwanese three
cup chicken at home and it's so yummy. Yummy, yummy recipe. So please do try it
and then let me know how you like it in the comments below. Feel free to like and

While this is cooking, just in case you're wondering where three cup chicken
comes from. It's the ratio between the soy sauce, the cooking wine, and also the
sesame oil. So it's three cups. One cup soy sauce, one cup cooking wine, and one
cup sesame oil. Traditionally this dish was made with chicken pieces bone-in
where you cut and chop up. I don't like to go through that hassle. I personally I
like the drumettes and they work for me. So either way it's up to you. Personal
preference. If you use the darker sesame oil and the darker soy sauce the chicken will
turn out to be a more darker color, caramel color. It's all up to you. I use
the low-sodium soy sauce so it's going to be a little bit lighter. But equally
it's tasty.
