How to Build a Real Pool Solar Heater on Wheels That Works . Hi friends, this is my Home Built Solar Heater for my pool. It is about 5 years old and cost around $700.00 to build. It uses 2 full sheets of 4X8 treated plywood painted black, and each panel has 400 feet of 1/2 inch irrigation tubing. It was a big job. The cart has wheels on it so it can be manoeuvred it during the day. It also weighs a lot, and this is actually my second cart as the first one had bicycle wheels and they were not strong enough to hold the weight of the heater assembly. The pressure to pump the water comes from the pool pump itself, I installed a tee on the return line after the salt generator and also a shut off on top of the pool so I can turn off the solar panels at night so they don;'t actually work in reverse and cool the pool as it gets cold at night. As you can see, this was done on a really cold day, and the temperature differential was around 20 degrees higher post heat pump. That's pretty good and the flow was pretty high as well.
