Chinese Traditional Story: The Stone of Three Lifetimes
This story took place during the Tang Dynasty. There was a young man named Li Yuan, who came from a noble family. In the year of Tian Bao, the rebels led by An Lushan attacked the troops commanded by his father, Li Cheng that was stationed in Luoyang, the eastern capital. Li Cheng was unable to stop the rebels and he was killed during the battle.
Li Yuan's father’s sudden death left a deep impression on him, and he swore that he would never work in an official position. He decided to become a monk. He donated all his property to Hui Lin Temple and invited an eminent monk, Yuanze to be the abbot. Yuanze was a high level cultivator. The two often talked all day and throughout the night. Sometimes their discussions were so intense that they forgot to eat or sleep. It could be said that the two had a deep predestined relationship with each other.
