Hey, what's up fellas? How you doing? Manettinelli here.
What's going on everyone? We're going to look at Bo Bichette's swing today.
Unbelievable player. Great year.
We're not going to break down his entire swing because I do that so much,
but I want you to look at something specific.
We're going to look at his barrel path. Super important.
We talk all the time. The main things,
the important things when it comes to hitting the three absolutes that all
hitters got to have, they've got to have a great bat path.
By great bat path,
I mean the barrel's got to be slightly up through the hitting zone.
Got to get the barrel behind the ball. It's got to be from the inside as well.
Can't be from the outside. Can't be around the ball. It's too slow.
It takes too long. Can't be down through the ball.
You'll never have good ball flight. Won't be in the hitting zone long enough.
You've got to have back quickness. So when your brain tells your body to go,
how quickly can I get this barrel up to speed?
How quickly can I get this barrel into the hitting zone,
into the contact position? How quick can this happen?
The quicker that it can happen, the longer I can wait to swing.
The longer I can wait to swing, the more information I have.
I can decipher what speed the pitch is, what location it's in.
If I have a long slow swing, if I don't have good swing quickness, well,
then I've got to swing earlier, which means I don't have as much as information,
which means I have to guess. The more you have to guess,
the harder it is to hit. So you've got to have quickness.
You've got to be able to get your barrel up to speed and into the hitting zone
and to the contact position as quickly as possible.
And the last thing is bat speed. The faster I can swing,
the harder I can hit the ball, the further the ball goes.
And so I got to have all three. And so we talk a lot, right?
I've made so many videos on how to do that, right?
How do we get the rear leg loaded? How do we get the upper body ready to hit?
You know, how does the, how does the swing need to unload?
How's the body need to unload, right? As, as the leg turns this way,
our upper body needs to go back. The barrel needs to go back, right?
So we've talked about that tons and tons of times. If you watch our channel,
you've heard it before, but I want to watch,
I want to focus on Boba Shett's barrel here because in my mind,
he's got one of the quickest, shortest swings in the game.
His barrel gets behind the ball in the hitting zone
from the inside so well. And if you just watch that path,
right, just focus on the hitter's path.
Is the barrel getting turned behind the ball and behind the ball?
All I mean by behind the ball is the ball is coming in like this,
right?
The barrel of the bat needs to get on that line behind that ball early.
Now it doesn't have to get behind the ball way back here. Okay.
But it cannot, if the ball is here, right? Here comes the ball.
It cannot get into the zone way out here, right?
I'm not giving myself enough time to be able to get the barrel behind the ball.
I see a lot of hitters. They come in like this. Not going to work.
You also can't come in like this. Not going to work.
You've got to get your barrel turned so that it can get picked up into the ball
so that your barrel hits this ball as the barrel is getting slightly up into the
zone. Okay. Really, really important. So that's barrel behind the ball.
How quickly can I get the barrel again behind it?
But I also have to be from the inside, right? This is from the inside.
Look at how tight this barrel is right here.
So as I start to make my turn, I'm from the inside.
If the ball is away, I can let the barrel out away. If the ball is middle,
I can let the barrel out middle. If the ball is in, I'm already in, right?
So this is short and quick. It's from the inside.
People hear all the time, stay inside the ball, stay inside the ball,
stay inside the ball, right? This is inside the ball,
but it's not just pushing my hands forward. A lot of people think that it's like,
I'll take my hands and run my hands forward and across my chest.
If you do that,
it's hard to create bat speed and it's hard to get the barrel behind the ball.
So how do you get this move right here? How do you get the barrel inside the ball?
For me, it's two things. Your upper body's got to work back.
Can't work forward and you can't just pull your lead shoulder out of there,
right?
So his upper body's got to work back and you've got to get your hands palm up,
palm down. You've got to feel like this knob is going to start to get turned up.
The barrel's always going to follow the knob. If the knob goes like this,
the barrel's going to go like this. If the knob goes out,
the barrel's going to go out. If my barrel goes out, it's a long swing.
That's not from the inside. That's from the outside, right?
Once my barrel gets out here and starts working from the outside.
Now, if the ball's in, I pull it foul. If the ball's middle,
I hook it to the third basement. If the ball's away,
I slice it to right field because my barrel isn't coming behind the ball, right?
From the inside, I can boom, I'm behind the ball. I can drive it to right center.
I can drive it middle. I can drive it to my pull side, right?
So it's really, really important from the inside, short,
tight, right?
Getting this knob to start to turn up so that my barrel will start to turn up
behind the ball. So that is key. Getting palm up,
palm down. That gets the barrel to turn. So watch the barrel.
Take a look at your own swing.
Is your barrel short, tight from the inside, barrel behind the ball?
If it is, awesome. If it's not, got to work on it.
Got to fix it. How tight, how short can you be?
You can have great bat speed, right?
You can have great bat speed and be around the ball.
You can be all different things and you might be able to get away with it at a
certain level,
but you can't play at a really high level if you just have bat speed, right?
You have to have bat speed along with bat quickness and a great bat path.
That's how you are able to play at a high level because the higher you go,
the better the pitching gets and good pitching.
It's going to show any holes that you may have in your swing. So again,
if you're not short and tight and quick, well,
when guys start to be able to throw hard,
when guys are able to mix speeds, when guys have good breaking balls, well,
now it gets really hard to hit. As I said before,
if I can wait longer to swing, if I can see the ball longer,
well, I don't have to guess, right?
Now I'm able to decipher between fastball breaking ball.
Guys can't get me out as much if they're able to change speeds.
If they throw hard inside and then slow away, can I cover both of those pitches?
If my swing is long and slow, really difficult.
If I have to cheat to the inside fastball because I can't get there because my
swing doesn't allow me, well, one, it'll be hard to hit plus velocity inside.
But if I have to cheat to the inside pitch,
how am I going to hit the slow pitch away? Can't do it.
There's my hole in my swing. Teams can attack it.
So check out your barrel path.
You've got to get your barrel as short and quick as you can.
If you want to know how to do that, we went through it really,
really quickly here, but go watch all our other videos.
We talk about the four core principles and exactly how to do each one and that
will help you. So that's all I have. Thanks for watching.
